Middle Eastern Pizza

I've had a fair amount of Middle Eastern pizza (also spelled pitza) since moving to NYC. Sometimes it truly is a thing unto itself, with lamb, onion, garlic, and spices piled liberally atop a crisp and puffy pita dough. Other times it's been just sort of Middle Eastern-ish toppings on a dough that doesn't seem to be much different from any other regular slice-joint dough. I prefer the former.

In all my reading on pizza and flatbreads, I've never seen anyone claim definitively where flatbread originated. Flatbreads seem to have sprung up in various Mediterranean cultures around the same time — so it's interesting to note that the words pita and pizza are pretty damn close.

I've often considered doing dispatches about the Middle Eastern stuff on Slice, but I'm not sure if y'all would be into it. What do you think? Are you a fan of Middle Eastern pizza?
