Sopranos Stars: Rocco 'Wonder Bread'; L&B Wonderful

Seems like every-so-many news cycles there's a story in one of the New York dailies in which Sopranos cast members opine on their favorite New York City restaurants. The Daily News just let loose the latest.
In this one, Steven R. Schirripa (Bobby Baccalieri), Michael Imperioli (Christopher Moltisanti), and Vincent Curatola (Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni) give much respect to Bensonhurst's L&B Spumoni Gardensand give the gasface to Rocco:
"A lot of cooks make their meatballs with too many breadcrumbs," says Schirripa, scowling. "That's a cardinal sin."
So how do they rate the meatballs at Rocco's, the much-hyped Italian joint opened last year by star chef Rocco DiSpiritoand featured in a reality TV series?
"Rocco? C'mon," says Schirripa, with a laugh. "The guy's Wonder Bread."
Mamma mia! Get out the cement shoes.
Schirripa and company had kinder things to say about the food, particularly the pizza, at L&B Spumoni Garden in Bensonhurst.
"It's the best pizza in New York," he raves.
"It's a terrific place," adds Curatola. "People come from all over to eat there."
Word.
We can't wait till it warms up a bit. The only thing that rivals L&B's Sicilian slice (it's unlike any square you've hadinstead of the typical heavy and dense crust, theirs is light and airy, topped with a bright, tasty sauce) is the scene there on a nice Sunday afternoon. Unadulterated Brooklyn.

I had L&B's sicilian pizza many times growing up in Brooklyn years ago. Last February I returned for the first time in 12 years to Brooklyn and had to go back to L&B to have a slice. What they served was only a fraction in size and quality of what was served years ago. The dough did not change, still light and crusty, but the sauce and cheese were very thin and had little taste. Whoever changed the good quality parmesian cheese for the cheap stuff they use now really messed up the recipe for this truly classic slice.

L&B is hands down the best pizza in Brooklyn, nothing comes close. If you want pizza as good as this, go to Rosa's in Maspeth.
