U.S. Pizza Team Update

An update on the U.S. Pizza Team and its performance at the World Pizza Championships in Italy, from Pizza Marketing Quarterly:

OXFORD, MISS. —The U.S. Pizza Team shined at the World Pizza Championship with one gold medal, Best Pizza in North America and several finishes in the top of each event.

Michael Shepherd, owner of Michael Angelo’s Pizza in Kenton, Ohio won first place in the largest dough stretch. His stretch came in at 87.5 centimeters. This was Michael’s third attempt at the title. Last year, he placed seventh in the largest stretch. He also placed fifth this year in the fastest pizza maker with a time of 1-minute, 8 seconds....

Brynne Humphreys (pictured right), general manager of Avalanche! Pizza in Athens, Ohio, won Best Pizza in North America with her Godzilla pizza. She dressed up as Signora Godzilla in a green sequin dress and green wig. Her boss, John Gutekanst, dressed up as Godzilla. She presented her pizza on a peel with a mini Godzilla and a huge bite taken out of it.

“I don’t even eat this pizza,” Brynne says. “Lots of people like it, but I’m more of a pepperoni person.”

2004_04_06_Siblings.jpgShepherd's sister, LeeAnna, placed seventh in the fastest pizza-maker contest. Other U.S.P.T. members placed—just not as high—in other categories. Click here for the full story from PMQ.

We're happy for the Pizza Team, but really, they better have placed first for Best North American Pizza, what with the "competition" being Canada and Mexico!

Still, Ms. Humphreys seems like our kinda gal. With those hipstery-looking glasses and the funny pigtails, she looks like the type of girl we (or at least I) dated (or at least tried to) in college—and she makes pizza. Damn. Read more about Ms. Humphreys here and here.

And George Giove, star of that New Yorker Talk of the Town piece last week—it doesn't look like he placed at all this year. And he kicked so much ass last year! Oh well, there's always next year, Mr. Giove.
