DeMarco's Open

The pizzeria affiliated with the now-legendary Di Fara is open, and reports are beginning to trickle in to Slice and starting to appear on Chowhound. Here's what Slice reader Mike had to say about the place:

Had a slice of their regualar pie. I have to say it's pretty close (almost there) to a Di Fara's slice. (Very good as far as pizza goes.) I was happy to see Dom's daughter there overseeing the kitchen. Has potential!

Here's a link to the discussion on the Chowhound Manhattan message board: DiMarco's Report

As you can imagine, Slice is fairly busy as a good portion of the staff prepares for Christmas travel, but we'll make a trip down there this week and report back before leaving town.

UPDATE: It took us a little longer than we'd hoped, but we just posted our review of DeMarco's.

Since I was nearby this afternoon I stopped at De Marco's (that's how it is spelled on their take-out menu) for a slice. I haven't been to Di Fara's so I can't compare. There were three slices left from the pie sitting on the counter. Given that, the slice was still really good. The crust was very light, crunchy and chewy. Sauce was garlicky and tasty. They were clearly still getting up to speed in the kitchen, but I'm ready to go back.

I just ate there as well, and also I have not been to Di Fara's. But the slice was awesome. The crust was charred and did not have the problems detailed in the Chowhound posts. The sauce and cheese were very tasty, and it had real grated parmesan on it. I also had a square slice, which was unusual, but had a very tasty sauce. It was slightly overcooked, I thought.

The strange thing was that you have to sit down and get served a slice, you just don't go up to the counter and get it. I'm not sure what they will do if it becomes popular; will they start serving slices the normal way?

Andrew, you went in the restaurant portion on MacDougall. There's a take-out section around the corner on Houston.
