Delivering pizza is a dangerous job. But is it so dangerous as to warrant a stash of weapons that included 26 handguns, eight rifles, and two shotguns?
That's what cops found in the apartment of a Queens pizza delivery driver after pulling him over on Friday. After discovering a loaded .22 in his car, the driver told police he had one more pistol at home. That turned out to be an understatement, as the Daily News divulges:
It was a weapons cache more likely to be found in Fallujah than Far Rockaway. Cops seized an arsenal - 26 handguns, eight rifles, two shotguns, three stun guns, boxes of ammunition and several dozen swords - in the Queens apartment of a pizza delivery man after after pulling him over for speeding, police said yesterday.Stephen Maloney was stopped after plainclothes officers spotted him zooming down Rockaway Beach Blvd. near Beach 100th St. about 9:45p.m. Friday....
"He was a little strange," said Lieut. Derrick Corrado.
"He was wearing camouflage and we thought that was weird."
Officers from the 100th Precinct recovered three-dozen antiquated guns along with the other weapons and 4,000 rounds of ammunition from the second-floor apartment.
Some weapons were stashed in boxes and others were strewn about in plain sight, atop the television and on tables, cops said.
When asked why he had so many weapons, Maloney told cops: "I was robbed once before, and I'm not going to be robbed again," a police source said.
Perhaps the holiday season has given police a rosier perspective, though. As Capt. Paul Piekarski said, "We don't believe that he was a bad guy. He likes his guns, some worth a lot of money."
