James, a Slice reader, sends us this tip:
I was at Manganaro's Hero-Boy [492 Ninth Ave., b/n 37th and 38th] yesterday and saw they were putting in pizza ovens. Home to the best chicken parm in the nyc, the pizza should be great. I could drink there sauce!!!!!
Thanks for the tip, James!
If you have a tip for us here at Sliceimminent pizzeria openings, overlooked neighborhood gems, etc.,either e-mail me directly (adam [at] sliceny [dot] com) or submit it using our tips form at right.
Manganaro's Hero-Boy is extremely overrated. Everything is made on an assembly line, and then reheated. Try a chicken parmigiana hero at Di Fara or the Corona Heights Pork Store, and you'll never go back. Manganaro's brother's next-store dry-goods store (are they still not speaking to each other?) has equally deplorable Italian food in the back, but at least that place has some character to it; Hero-Boy feels like the food court at the mall.
It’s not overrated. For eight bucks you get a mighty good chicken parm, and a soda. Everything else around the Port Authority sucks. You can’t even find a decent slice anywhere. So this is good news. The brother’s place is horrible, Character? The are so rude I don’t even understand how they are still in business.
And when I said NYC I meant Manhattan sorry.
You told me places in Brooklyn and Queens. My family is from Corona. Spaghetti Park!
James, there are tons of better places around Port Authority. Which ones have you tried besides Hero Boy? In fact, one of the best chicken parm sandwiches (as well as some damn fine pizza) in NYC can be found in the neighborhood. Check out Lazzara's on 38th btw 7th and 8th.
Yeah never been to Lazzara's, but thats more of a sit down place. Im talkin quick cheap lunch spot. A regular pizza place thats good. Not a Lombardis or Johns that you have to get a pie.
You know, I just came back from Manganaro s Hero Boy, because I was walking by and wanted some Italian food. I avoid the other side of the restaurant where the old lady works in the back, because she is extremely rude. This was my first time going in Hero Boy side of the restaurant. I went in there hoping to get the same food, but without the abuse. But they are on the rude side too, and I probably won t come back. So, while still eating my Manganaro s lunch here at work, I suspected that if I googled the key words: Manganaro s New York rude, that I d find that my experience was not unique. And that is how I found this web page. Well, let me tell you about the lady in the back. First of all let me tell you the place looks like a classic old-world Italian place. I went in, was looking at the food. Before I could open my mouth, the lady yelled at me, telling me she didn t have all day, and that I should order my food right now. There was no line, I was the only person there at the moment, so it s not like I was holding up other customers. I walked out with my food, thinking I d never go back again, but not long after, that craving for Italian food was back and I went back in to try one more time. No problems this time, but as I was being served, 3 or 4 German tourists came in, looking around. She barked out from behind the counter, telling them this is not a tourist attraction and to order their food now or get out! So, I decided I d never go in there again. I wonder how many other people have made the same decision, and I wonder how much it is costing the restaurant in lost profit? Certainly there is someone, the owners maybe, who might be concerned about the effect of this rudeness on their bottom line. At this point, I m wondering whether a meatball hero and salad is worth the 15.00 I spent, considering the bad taste it leaves in your mouth, not the food, mind you, but the attitude some of their employees. And, I mentioned this just now to a co-worker and he began to recite similar war-stories about what happened to him in there, or what he saw being done to other customers.
THE PLACE SUCKS. They charge $5 for delivery and their $10 Mile High Sandwich has on each side 1 slice of each meat and 1 slice of cheese. The firm, dry bread is huge, but the insides not so much, and it lacked any punch or real flavor.
