In high school, in the smallish Kansas City suburb where I grew up, all 18-year-old males were subject to a telephone call from Sgt. Hand. The call would come a few weeks after you mailed your Selective Service card to the government. Sgt. Hand, you see, was an Army recruiter.
When it came to recruiting yours truly, however, Sgt. Hand's mission went unaccomplished. The Army's latest recruiter, however, might have had an easier time of it. That's because this branch of the military is now using pizza to convince youngsters to join up. From the New York Post:
The U.S. Army National Guard is using a novel approach to entice college students to join: pizza.Ads for the National Guard will start appearing next week on pizza boxes in 20 markets with college campuses, including New York.
The bright blue, military-themed boxes encourage students to take "a bite" out of their college loans by signing up for reserve duty.
The food of choice in dorms is also a favorite with the 18- to 34-year-old demographic coveted by advertisers and the armed forces alike.
This might be a smart move for the Army, as college debts can get pretty nasty. One thing I wonder, though, is if top brass considered that most of the kids ordering pies are either drunk or high.
Looking to enlist yourself? Here's the Army recruitment site.
Know someone in the Army who's in Iraq? You can send them pizza: GIPizza.com.
