Slice recently received a tip via our superhot tips box. A few days ago, Slice reader Bruce e-mailed us:
I'm addicted to a new thin crust pizza place. It just opened 10 days ago. No one knows about it yet (OK, almost no one). It's like my own secretbut now I want to tell everyone. The pizza is amazing! Two guys from Naples, wood oven, the whole deal. I've been LIVING there!
Today, we received a bit more info from Bruce, as well as the photo of No. 28's 12-inch pizza Margherita:
Get the basic 12-inch Margherita. Amazing. And a tip: Sit on one of the barstools in front of the oven, not in the dining room. The service is faster there.
The menu includes about 10 different pizzas, 12" 18", and, I think, 29". There are pasta and salads, but the center of attraction is the amazing thin-crust pizza. The owners are two brothers from Naples. One of them, Salvatore Olivella, used to be the pizza chef at Pie on Fourth Avenue. They have also recently opened L'asso on Mott Street. I've been to Number 28 at least eight times since they opened just before Christmas. I'm addicted to the 12" Margherita with fresh garlic (the garlic is optional, just ask).
No. 28 Location: 28 Carmine Street, New York, NY 10014 (The Village, b/n Bleecker & Bedford) Phone: 212-463-9653 Hours: Noon to midnight, every day Payment: Cash only, for now
Thanks, Bruce, for the tip. We'll check out No. 28 for ourselves as soon as we can!
My boyfriend and I went to No. 28 on Saturday and really enjoyed the pizza and service. The staff and owner are awesome. One thing I am puzzled about - our pizza wasn't round and every picture I see about 28 shows a round pizza. Whaddup wid dat?
Not freak anyone out, but I went to the bathroom there and ... no soap at all. And it's not like they ran out, they obviously have never had soap there, and may never have soap there.
Yikes. Great pizza, but I kept thinking of that Seinfeld episode.
THERE IS SOAP!!! I was there last night. There is plenty of soap, so do not fear! Luigi made me the most amazing Calzone I ever had! (not on the menu, natch). And I shared a 29" Margherita with a friend. That paper-thin crust blows away all contenders! This place is filling up fast- Time Out NY wrote them up so go before the reviews hit the Times or New York Magazine!
i went there with some friends saturday night...the pizza was amazing...delicious and fresh.Absolutely the best oven pizza in NYC!!!!!!!!!!!!wonderful!............
I suggest n28 to all of u who want to taste the real italian pizza from NAPLES..this pizza is different from all the italian pizzas in the city, infact it has a different shake but mostly a different taste .ps:the place is really Cool!
My friend is the ex-girlfriend of one of the Napolitano brothers that make the pizza at this Village storefront. I had VIP treatment when I was there, but it was really good. Service was a little lacking and the decor needs some help, but overall it was pretty authentic Naples style pizza. They gave me some mozarella di buffalo that they get from some secret purveyor that was unbelievable! Brian

It almost appears as though the sauce is ladled on top of the cheese, no?
