Map & Schedule

This reporter is excited to report that he'll be seeing stars and stars in the making in the Lone Star State next week. I'm headed to Austin, Texas, to attend a few days and nights of South by Southwest, the annual music, interactive, film, and what-have-you festival held in that fair city.

The impetus for this trip: One of my best friends, Andy, will be playing in this year's extravaganza. His band, A. Graham & the Moment Band, was signed to Sonic Unyon last summer, and he and his gang will be performing under that label's banner.

I'll be acting as a roadie for them, flying into Kansas City this Saturday, driving down to Texas with them, eventually arriving Wednesday afternoon.

Regular Slice readers know I wouldn't miss the opportunity to eat pizza on this trip, and that's exactly what I'll be doing, first in The K.C., then in Denton, Texas (where A. Graham plays at a venue called Rubber Gloves, and then in Texas's capital.

In the spirit of SXSW, I'll be hosting SliceXSW: The Slice Pizza Conferences. Quick research on the Internets helped me find that two of Austin's top-rated pizzerias are within striking distance of the SXSW events downtown. So, on Thursday, March 17, I'll be at Brick Oven at 1 p.m. Any Slice readers who will be in Austin are welcome to stop by. The following day, I'll be at Frank & Angie's at 1 p.m. Feel free to attend one or both SliceXSW events if you can make it. Just be sure to RSVP to adam (at) sliceny (dot) com. And please don't call the pizzerias asking about these "conferences." They don't know about them, and they'll most likely think you're crazy if you ask about "Slice by Southwest."

If you plan on attending SliceXSW, download the map and schedule in the breakout box above. And visit Slice in the coming days for on-the-road pizza-blogging from The K.C. and Austin.

good luck-i'll be interested to know what you think of austin's pizza.

As a proud Austinite, and a proud pizza lover, let me say that you are missing the boat in your SliceXSW slice selections. Though both Brick Oven and Frank and Angie's can make a decent pie, I would put them at best third and fourth in the city. The two not-to-be-missed pizza joints for the wise sampler are Mangia's and Austin Pizza. For the former, I would recomend you visit the Lake Austin location, not far from Sixth Street and the SXSW happenings. You can get good pizza at all the locations, but the Lake Austin site has the best atmosphere. Any of the Austin Pizza's will rock your world.
Enjoy the town!

As another Austin local, my votes would go to Pizza Nizza and Conan's. Pizza Nizza recently relocated to somewhere out on Bee Caves Road, but they still deliver to my area. :) Their bianca sauce (a cream sauce) is unique and tasty.

The Conan's location hidden near UT isn't much for atmosphere, but the pizza (Chicago-style deep dish) is great. Plus, they have a big table in the center of the room that's perfect for large groups.

I am a Jersey native and I have lived here for three years. All the pizza advertizes as "New York" and almost all fall terribly short. Brick Oven is ok as is Frank and Angies. But you are missing a CRITICAL place: SACCONES! The dude is from Carteret, New Jersey. Hands down, the best pizza south of Trenton.

check out east side pies all you pizza snobs.

If you make it down this way again check out Milto's on 29th and Guadalupe. Great slices and greek salads too!

This from a girl born and bred in Brooklyn. If you come down again, try the "only" NY pizza in Austin at HomeSlice on S. Congress. Jen's restaurant has the best pizza in Austin -- bar none!

Sorry you wasted your time in Austin eating that crap Only 2 real pizza joints worth a damn in Austin Rounders on west 6th an Saconnes off 183 Jens restaurant is a joke It's a hipster/poser paridise You can't take a pizza class for a week and expect to make a great pie. Lucky for her Texans don't know pizza Don't believe the hype pizza is not about atmosphere

this is the problem, people. you move to other places and lose your ability to recognize great pizza and crap pizza. rounders is horrid, saccone's is not worth the drive at all, very mediocre. there's also slices & ices which seemed promising but can't get their act together. the problem is that people typically like 20 items on your pizza and so you can't taste the pizza only the toppings. you might as well order from dominos, in that case? old austinites - before they had good food here -- swear by milto's, frank & angies, and brick oven. that's because they don't know anything about pizza. they know bbq, but not pizza. 1. cozzoli's pizza - the single best real new york pizza in town. unfortunately, it's not hip and cool so many have issues with that. as the other poster noted, it's not about the atmosphere, people, it's about the pie. 2. home slice - they do a fine job, service can be sketchy (too many hippies) and the whole pies are better than the slices. 3. vespaio - the best hand made wood oven margarita pizza in town hands down.

I am from Brooklyn, NY (Sheepshead Bay) and spend summers back home. Rounders on W 6th street is the real pizza in Austin.

Those others are wannabees. I have tried them once and will never return. At least not on my own dime.

I tried Saconnes and was not impressed, but I may try them again.

Rounders, huh, peppertree? Thanks for the info!
