By the time this post publishes automagically, I'll be at the Brooklyn Federal Courthouse reporting for jury selection. While I'd normally relish a chance to actively participate in justice American-style, I've got a lot of other things going on, so I kinda hope I don't get picked. Especially if it's an evil-ass months-long case, which, given the fact that this is federal court, who knows. And given that this is the same court that heard the cases USA v. Gotti (PDF) and Louima, et al v. City of New York (PDF), all bets are off.
What's this got to do with pizza? A number of things. First is that I won't be at a computer to answer your e-mails. Second thing is that I'll be in downtown Brooklyn instead of my normal lunchtime stamping grounds. I'm near Grimaldi's and Fascati, but I've already done those. Anyone out there got any places for me to try during lunch break? Leave suggestions in the comments section below. I'll check them on break if they don't confiscate my iBook. Third thing is that I'd hate to get on a sequestered jury. (As the late Johnnie Cochran might have said, "If the jury's sequestered, this site will fester.")
Anyway, I guess this is a better way of seeing the inside of a courtroom than from either the plaintiff or defendant's seat, but who knows. As long as they're not trying a case that involves a pizzeria, I've got no prejudices that could get me out of service. Mamma mia.
Also: If you've got any suggestions for pizzerias a little farther southeast of the location on this map here, holla at ya boy. I've also got a Kings County Court juror summons for the 25th of this month. When it rains, it pours.
Try "My Little Pizzaria" on Court between State and Atlantic. Not any competition for DiFara's, but a solid neighborhood slice joint. The fresh mozzarella slice is the only thing that makes this stand out.
And AVOID at all costs the "Broadway Pizzaria and Bakery" on Court and Schermerhorn. It amazes me that they are even still open. Nothing there is ever good. Except at 3am when there are no other options nearby.
After state jury duty this summer we were told we wouldn't have to serve again for several years. Is it different because you're dealing with the Feds?
Joe: I got a waiver to exempt me from the Kings County service.
Federal jury duty gets you out of Federal service for a period of two years thereafter. State/county service gets you out of it for six years. If you serve on a federal case, it gets you out of the state for a period of years, too. But I don't know if it would be two or six. Either way, I won't have to do the Kings County thing for at least a couple years now.
Anyway, I got put on a jury. But they don't do sequestering. So I can still do blogging in my noncourt time.
Sam's at 238 Court St. is about a 10-15 minute hike from the courthouse. It's an old-school Carroll Gardens place complete with Louis-the-grouchy-waiter and his father, Mario, in the kitchen. Good brick-oven pizza (no slices) is definitely worth checking out. Closed on Tuesdays.
Hi Meryl. I've been to Sam's. It's pretty good but a bit too far from the courthouse. It's probably more like 15-20 from the U.S. District Court. The service managed to be gruff yet friendly (?!) but was very slow. So there's no way I'd be able to do lunch there and make it back in time.

there's front street pizza in dumbo, but i never eat the slices there - however i love the pinwheels.
i've heard decent things about 'my little pizzeria' but haven't tried it yet.
there are some really bad places downtown brooklyn, i think the 'broadway' place mentioned above is one of them.

That'd be the courthouse through the trees?

I would say forget about the pizza and go with chipotle burritos. Right around the corner from court, on montague.
