Pizza Politics

20060223Bush.jpgI've been outta the country three days, and already I'm behind on pizza news Stateside.

But you gotta love Gee Dub. Check out this crazy quote about our favorite food:

"India's middle class is buying air-conditioners, kitchen appliances, and washing machines, and a lot of them from American companies like GE and Whirlpool and Westinghouse. And that means their job base is growing here in the United States. Younger Indians are acquiring a taste for pizzas from Domino's, Pizza Hut ...''

Domino's and Pizza Hut. Now there's progress!

Today in my food history class my teacher briefly spoke about how most American kids (and surely many adults) only know pizza as being from Domino's or Pizza Hut. Growing up in the suburbs, most of the pizza I ate (not much, mind you) was from Pizza Hut. Ohhh, the joy. In Taiwan I remember eating pizza from Domino's, but being disappointed because the large size was equal to an American medium.

...Anyway. Yup, "progress". We've spread pizza to other parts of the world, but have boiled the choices down to just two. :P

As an Indian, I can tell you that Pizza Hut & Domino's pizza in Bombay, India does *not* taste anything like the pizzas from the same companies here in NYC. They aren't in the Grimaldi's - DiFara range of course, but they are actually decent, a bit like Pizzeria Uno or California Pizza Kitchen. I was very disappointed when I had Domino's pizza in NYC, it tasted like cardboard.

The best pizzas in Bombay back in the '90s were from this place called Smoking Joe's, great nicely charred crust bottom, pizzas. We would often get the spinach & corn, yes corn, topping.
