Round and Round: Pizza Cutter Test

The Chicago Tribune takes nine pizza cutters out for a test spin. This being a Chicago paper, its judging skewed more toward wheels that could handle deep dish:

We wanted a cutter that could make slices without too much effort, cutting but not crushing that thick outer crust, and with wheels big enough to navigate the fillings. The smaller wheels got gobbled up by the pizza; in some cases the safety guards were so close to the wheels that cheese and sauce collected on the base--a mess for sure, but also robbing our servings of those tasty ingredients. Finally, we sought a comfortable grip as we rolled our way through the pizza pies.

The Trib's faves?

OXO 4-inch Cutter (safe for nonstick pans; $10.95)
KitchenAid Large Pizza Cutter ($14.99)
Cuisipro Pizza Wheel ($13.99)

The paper didn't like the Zyliss palm-held pizza wheel, which is no surprise. It's always looked like a case of form over function to me.

I recommend my Wusthof-Trident Mezzaluna. It's a bit more spendy, but it's dreamy for cutting pizza, mincing, chopped salads.... A good multi-tasker, in other words. And since it's a quality knife, you can always re-sharpen it.

Interesting. Alton Brown loves that handheld cutter. I've never used one. I always use a big dull knife that a former roommate left in my drawer many, many years ago. That's the only thing it's there for.

I watched Carmine, of Sal and Carmine's slice up a pie a couple of nights ago. He used a generic commercial pizza cutter, sans safety guard, to cut up a pie with four quick slices. No pressure, no fuss, no wasted motion. It was one of those small, beautiful moments of a master craftsman at work.

I wanted to let you know that I am hooked on your website! My wife thinks I am as insane as you are about pizza! lol....My father used to do the same thing that I do now, on the hunt for the perfect slice. You guys have helped us do that. I would like to recommend a good slice joint called Family Pizza on flatbush and parkside ave's in BK. It is in my opionion the best quick slice joint in the area, in out and happy (if you're in a rush). P.S. My wife 3 kids and I would be honored to accompany you on one of your SLICE trips maybe to Family Pizza some time. My wife and I are in our late 20's, so were still pretty cool. Talk soon.

I have owned all of these except the OXO carbonate one.

The Xyliss palm thing was the worst. It was hard to clean and after only a few times using it, it broke. Complete waste of money.

The Cuisinart thing (I think it was the same one) had this weird double prong that kept getting clogged with pizza trimmings.

I like the KitchenAid one. It is solid and doesn't clog. I bake my pizzas on a silicone sheet now, and I do worry about the KitchenAid cutting right through the silicone. It hasn't happened yet, though.

I think I'll pick up the OXO. I've seen it in the store.

I also have a plastic ulu knife, which works pretty well, but the edge gets dull.

I have a giant steel ulu knife, which would work well if my pizza pan didn't have a lip on it, and again, I would worry about the blade cutting through the silicone sheet.
