AOL Cityguide: 13 Perfect Pizzas Across America

And they are:

  1. Zachary's Chicago Pizza: Berkeley, California

  2. PIzzeria Regina: Boston

  3. Patsy Grimaldi's Pizzeria: Scottsdale, Arizona

  4. Vic's Bar & Restaurant: Bradley Beach, New Jersey

  5. Tacconelli's: Philadelphia

  6. John's: New York City

  7. Star Pizza: Houston

  8. Imo's Pizza: Saint Louis

  9. Home Run Inn: Chicago

  10. Mellow Mushroom: Atlanta

  11. Windy City PIzza: Tampa, Florida

  12. Anthony's Pizza and Pasta: Denver

  13. Papreza's Pizza: Henderson, Nevada

Well, they say 13 is an unlucky number, right? I mean, only one New York City pizzeria on this list? And it's John's? John's is good, sure, but not the best in NYC. And maybe we should hold our tongue until we've had pizza from the Grimaldi's branch in Arizona, but how can it be any better than the homegrown original Grimaldi's? I guess AOL had to tailor its list to please people across the country. And it's further evidence that these lists are always flawed. Heck, even if Slice put out a list, I'm sure someone—lots of someones—would find fault with it. But they're always good for debate, so have at it. Comments welcome.

Well... you have to remember. If you've never had a good slice of pizza, your taste is going to be pretty skewed.

John's? Really?

Is this list in order?

I must admit I definitely miss Zachary's in Berkeley. A friend of mine once brought a par-baked Zachary's pie with her as carry-on luggage on a flight from Oakland to JFK! I'm surprised Cheeseboard Pizza (from Berkeley as well) isn't on the list.

Seriously? #1 on the list is a Chicago style pizzeria? While I'm sure it's very good food, I have a hard time believing that that is the best pizza in the nation. I mean deep dish!?! Come on...

I also agree with you about John's. Better than Patsy's, Grimaldi's, Di Fara, or the massively underrated La Villa? psh. Doubt it.

Good points, all. Elmer: Yeah. I've you haven't had a really GOOD slice, your taste would be skewed. I was too crazy about the results to consider that. It looks like AOL Cityguide compiled this list as an amalgam of the "Best of Pizza" lists on their other sites. Couldn't tell if they were editor picks or reader picks.

I haven't been yet, but with the raves that Pizzeria Bianco in Phoenix gets, I'm surprised IT wasn't on there in place of Grimaldi's.

I can vouch for Anthony's - when I lived in Denver my NJ roomie and I would do the 15 minute drive from the outer edge of Lakewood to get a slice of proper Sicilian or their excellent sausage slice. Living here in Holland now, trapped in a web of bready 'za that makes Dominos look good, I consider those halcyon days indeed.

AOL guide to great pizza? LOL!

The pick of Mellow Mushroom in Atlanta is certainly deserved. It has the most flavorfull dough I've ever experienced. They have special spring-water that they use to create these near perfect pies. That said, Di Fara and Grimaldi's both trump it, in my opinion.

Whats more ironic than a Chitown pizza as #1 on the list, is that its a Chitown pizzeria from BERKELEY of all places. But, I have eaten at Zachary's many times, and I have to say.. their pizza IS awesome. I've never put it head to head with say... Gino's East but Zachary's does make an awesome pie.

I can't believe that they put Regina at number 2. I've been in Boston now for four years, and the only thing that Regina has going for it is that it is "old." It is in no way shape or form the "best" slice in Boston (maybe a decade and a half ago, but now it has become way TOO commercialized, and the pizza has suffered...the place has a name, that's it). I'd rate Santarpios as the best pizza I've had in Boston; that place is legit.

No New Haven pizza? What an awful list.

I'm originally from Jersey and I lived in Berkeley CA for a little while. I can't believe Zachary's was rated #1. One of the most overrated pizza places I've ever been to. Salty and expensive. It's a crime that there's only one NYC pizzeria on the list! My favorite pizzeria is in Astoria...Grand Ave. Yummm....

Krissy: Is the place called Grand Ave. or is it on Grand Ave.? What's the location? My gf lives in Astoria, so I'm always up there.

All big cities! Some great pizzas are in small towns. For example: John's Wildwood Pizzeria in Edinboro,Pa. Great Boardwalk Pizza without the messy vacation gettin in the way! p.s. I own this shop(27 years).

Coal Mine Pizza in Boca Raton, FL is over priced garbage don't waste your time or money.

Imo's presence on this list renders a very questionable air...provel "cheese" is something New Yorkers should be very, very glad they aren't familiar with.

Imo's???? The melted 'provel' cheese has the texture of warm mayo. The crust was inspired by the original Pizza Hut of 1950s, a sort of Saltine cracker crust still popular in the midwest.

LMFAO!!!!! Little Vincent's needs to be somewhere on that list...... and only 1 NY pizzeria?!?!?! come on........

I grew up at the Jersey shore and personally I never really cared for Vic's pizza. Pete & Elda's is MUCH better! Tacconelli's is the most overrated pizza place ever. You actually have to call them ahead of time to reserve your dough. Ridiculous! My brother, aunt and I had to try it to see what all the hype was about and were extremely disappointed.
