Buy Me Some Pizza and Cracker Jack

Buy Me Some Pizza and Cracker Jack

Just got back from tonight's Yankees vs. Indians game (Yankees, 1-0). The seats kicked ass; the pizza didn't. It's Famous Famiglia, which you may be familiar with from one of its many locations in New York City or around the country. As one of my companions this evening said, "Eh. It's no better or no worse than Sbarro." You know the score -- I'd recommend sticking to the equally overpriced but more traditional hot dog, peanuts, and beer menu.

Slices are $4.50 (!!!) each for plain or pepperoni and are sized smaller than typical slice-joint portions.

Here's the upskirt:

As you can see, rather blonde crust with the telltale crosshatching revealing it's been cooked on screens. I'm not sure, but I'd bet they're running 'em through impinger ovens to meet the demand. In fact, I think I see one in the background of this photo (click through for larger versions):

Don't do this. You'll get yelled at by stadium staff if you lay anything on top of the dugout.

Here's the pepperoni slice.

wow, awesome atmospheric pictures. makes me want to go to a game.

wow, nice freaking seats man.

Synchronicity. Early last evening I went with my son to No. 28 Carmine, based on the positive information on your site. May be my best pizza experience ever, and I've hit most of the best of NY. Awesome Margherita (18 inch). From there we headed to the game. Would introduced myself if I knew you were there. Your site has been of great value. Keep up the good work. Did a little slice/calzone tour on Sunday: http://pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/pjgiannone/album?.dir=c416re2&.src=ph&store=&prodid=&.done=http%3a//pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/pjgiannone/my_photos

Paulie Gee: Thanks for the kind words. I'm glad Slice is of value to you. Would have been nice to meet you at the game. Next time, I'll wear a Slice t-shirt and make a Slice sign to wave at the FanCam. Heh.

You gotta go to Mike's Deli (Same as the one on Arthur Avenue, on the ground floor of the Stadium. No, pizza, OK, but great sandwiches.

Buddy Tom and I were also at last night's game, but in the nosebleed seats. Looks like the boss laid some corporate seats on you...first row, visiting dugout. We go to about 20 home games each season and have made fair game of pre-game food shopping. For such a wonderful stadium, the food at Yankee Stadium sucks. You can pretty much bring any outside food into the stadium (save glass containers), as long as you transfer your victuals into a clear plastic bag before entering (that falafel might contain a weapon of mass destruction). Working downtown, my favorite bag to pack is from a great middle Eastern joint on John St. Sushi works, too, as do sandwiches, Indian, etc. Never brought pizza...just cannot stomach pizza that sat in a box for an hour. Any taste and texture positively lost by then.

I wonder if anyone has come away from a ballpark of any kind remarking about the terrific and inexpensive food and the beers were cheaper than I can get from my local bar! Biggles

Dr. B: I don't think anyone ever has. This post was more an excuse to show pictures from a Yankees game (which I go to about once every 2 years) than about pizza. But I figured people might want to know what kind of pizza was available at Yankee Stadium, seeing as how I'd done Shea before. --Adam

Man, Yankee Stadium has been in the family for nearly all of its 83-year existence, and I watch from the catbird seat in the upper deck. AK, no doubt because he's the macher of all these Web logs, walks right in and sits within spitting distance of Alex Rodridguez. No justice, I tell you. Maybe Slice will get corporate naming rights for the bathrooms or something. For a great eating experience near the Stadium, go to the Feeding Tree. It's a West Indian place on the east side of Gerard Avenue, just north of 161st Street. (Gerard is between River Avenue and the Grand Concourse.) Just be prepared for a fiery meal; it's not cooked for a gringo palate. Blows the pants off those $5 dirty-water dogs any day.

I second the emotion, seltzerboy, about the Feeding Tree. I am a recent convert to this fine Jamaican joint. Their ackee platter cannot be beat. Caution to diehard Yankee fans: the wait to be served there immediately before gametime can be upwards of a half hour. It seems prudent, therefore, to get your grub about an hour before first pitch. I've had fine food at some minor league ballparks. In our own backyard, I've enjoyed several games at Yankees' AA affiliated Trenton Thunder games, at beautiful Riverside Stadium. The beer served there is microbrewed River Horse Ale, from nearby Lambertville, New Jersey. And of course, there's pizza a mile and a half away.

I'm glad you guys finally covered the pizza at the house that Ruth built. I've been eating "Famiglia" at the stadium for the past few years and unfortunately it was an improvement on the previous pizza distributor Dominoes. They had a ball of dough that was no bigger then your fist. It was pretty bad.

I finally found out where you can buy these Cracker Jacks online without paying an arm or a leg for them. You can buy them here: http://www.nationwidecandy.com/CANDY/ItemRelations.asp?&GROUP=18&CHOICE=47 I compared prices everywhere and they really do have cheapest price.
