Photo of the Day: The First Pizza Hut

1st Pizza Hut, blogged to Slice from the Flickr photostream of spynotebook
We normally don't rhapsodize about the Hut here on Slice, but this is kinda cool. It's the first Pizza Hut. In Wichita, Kansas.
Yes, Kansas.
What's the matter with Kansas, indeed.
Before I get any angry emails from Kansans, lemme disclose that I was raised there. Therefore I can poke fun at the Sunflower State. Ed.

I don't get it... why are you bagging on Kansas? I'd love to visit that Pizza Hut...
Slice Jason at 8:16PM on 07/25/06
That better be a joke, Jason. ;) My parents are moving to Wichita soon, so I'm sure I'll be visiting this building at Christmastime. I have a love/hate relationship with Kansas/KC area, as I'm sure most people do when it comes to the place they grew up in. I love the straightforward, no-nonsense, hardworking aspect that seems to be a hallmark of the Kansan people, but you gotta admit, there's some real boneheads there: Fred Phelps, the people who got evolution excluded from textbooks, the football player who got stuck in a Taco Bell drive-thru window. Need I say more?

You don't have to be from Kansas to rag on that place. It is the state that started teaching evolution in public schools. Pizza Hut sucks. Kansas sucks.
Slice Dan Soda at 9:09PM on 07/25/06
Sorry, mean getting evolution excluded. Still, Kansas sucks.

Cool, but it doesn't have the proper Pizza Hut roof!
Slice Joe at 10:52PM on 07/25/06
Gargh. Watch it, Dan Soda! Joe: Not even the new Pizza Huts have the proper roof. And the Hut's new logo is horrible. The iconic roof looks more like a smushed hat! --Adam

Yay Kansas! My mother's side of the family is from Wichita and Hutch. We don't have many family left there, even thoughI remember it highly more than fondly. I did go back for a visit 4 years ago and had a hard time with the food. But Hutch is just as I remember it and breathed deeply the love. Wal-mart sure has a left the old downtown in a shambles, but that's no news. Ah, good times. Biggles

Just because you re saying its a Pizza hut, i agree with you otherwise it looks more of a haunted house...............but i do praise your efforts you made for the post. Loved it and its an amazing pic!!!

ok, poll for the audience. Terrorists have kidnapped your family, and in order to get them back you have to eat either Pizza Hut or Dominos. Which do you choose?
Slice Weekly Journalist at 10:17PM on 07/28/06
Good question, WJ. I'd eat pizza from the Hut. --Adam

Hey, The Hut isn't world-class pizza (even though it's world-wide), but I logged a couple summers working there when I was in high school in Wichita, and there's worse food being put out there than a Pizza Hut pizza. And 95% of the residents of Wichita have probably never HAD a really good pizza, because really good pizza doesn't have to give out buy one-get one free coupons.
