After much discussion and smacktalk about it in the Comments section, Slice was able to get a copy of the infamous "Syracuse Pizza Manifesto" by pizzafans D.J. Bubbles (right) and M.C. Treats. Though less a "manifesto" than a list, it is nonetheless helpful for pizza-craving 'Cuse folk. We'll see if this starts a flame war with the pizza cognoscenti in Syracuse the way it did between Bubbles and Mr. Cutlets.
THE LEGITIMATE [SYRACUSE] TOP 10
10. PEPPINO’S: Great crust, good cheese, but a little too greasy.
9. MARTINO’S: Grab a great slice (much better than ordering a pie here) and be thankful that there is at least one decent joint on Thompson Road.
8. JOHNNY’S: Thicker than most so pile on their fresh toppings and enjoy.
7. GINO & JOE’S: Gotta go north for this pie but it’s worth the trip for their slices; if you can stand the grease.
6. MOVINO: Wood-burned oven pie. A little pricey but worth it. Give the pesto slice a try. Toppings are a little stale, stay with the plain cheese pie.
5. DINO’S PIZZERIA: The crust is too bland and there’s not enough sauce, but they still serve a great NY style pie.
4. ZJ’S PIZZA: Number one on the Hill for a reason. Terrific slices, so-so pie.
3. NICK’S TOMATO PIE: The only place to eat after the bars close in Armory.
2. LA PIZZERIA OF NORTHSIDE: A little dirty inside, but try a slice, you won’t regret it. Good luck finding a time when they’re actually open.
1. PEARL STREET DELICATESSEN: This place could make a profit in NYC. Using Grande mozzarella, a sweet sauce, and a crispy, thin crust, these gents make it just the way it should be made in the state of New York.
Honorable Mention: Fratelli’s, Bosco’s Pizzeria, Varsity Pizza, Acropolis, Dominick’s (tomato pie), Mario & Salvo’s, and Twin Trees.
You obviously spent your law-school years refining your pizza palate, something I never thought of doing back in the day. To wit, none of these names even rings a bell. Even your lone place on the Hill is well after my time, as is its predecessor. (Some alums in the office filled in the gaps for me.) What does one do at SU if not eating pizza or whining about the weather? Here's my manifesto of the top 11 brands of 40s I drank as a freshman: 11. Icehouse 10. Pabst Blue Ribbon 9. Golden Anniversary 8. Country Club 7. Ballantine 6. Genesee 5. Colt 45 4. Schlitz Red Bull 3. Schlitz Malt Liquor 2. St. Ides 1. Old English Eating pizza is much more fun, so kudos to your list. Come out to Forest Hills one day. You'll feel guilty about publishing a list without Nick's.
Seltzerbomb, Nick's is on the list! I just haven't been to the one out in Forest Hills, only the (just as good?) locale in the UES. anyway, I'll be on my way to FH whenever it works for you, I'm glad we're burying the hatchet and moving on with our pie-happy lives! BTW, where was King Cobra on that 40oz list???
Pearl Street Delicatessen must be a myth. I can't find it in the phone book and the number I got on the web is disconnected. Will I ever find good pzza in the Cuse?
Wondering why Patsy's Pizza over on Erie Blvd West wasn't included in your search. Since they use fresh mozz shredded daily, homemade sauce and dough... they prolly should have been considered. Also, Movinos is closed now too... comment courtesy of Dj Deliva
Yo deliva, I really don't think Patsy's (great name, lots to live up to) was open during my time in the Cuse, I definitely would've remembered that one and I would've found it as I drove all over the city (with the exception of the south side) looking for joints as I was a fat little facker back then who ate his way through tough Syracuse winters.
Pearl Street did, in fact, close TDCrash, but it was the best in town while it was around - and my word is bond, son!
Pavone's must be higher, as well as the Varsity. Oh. You must like thick crust (i.e., bread with some sauce and cheese). Syracuse really does not merit a top 10 list. Make a pilgrimage to The Colony, in Stamford, Connecticut. You have to wait for hours just to get a pie. The hot-oil pizza is without parallel.
DJ Bubbles was joined on most Syracuse junkets by a guy appropriately named MC Treats. I can't say much about the pizza in the salt city, but the italian food in the Cuse and Utica rocks and is better than anything I've tried in NYC !
I never had pizza when I spent the 2003-2004 winter from hell working in Syracuse (http://goldensnowball.com/golden-snowball-03-04-season.htm ) but I did discover a great place for a brew and a roast beef sandwich in Armory Square called Clark's Ale House:
Avicolli's on rt. 57 Liverpool (northern 'burb of Syracuse) is awesome. Much better than Gino and Joe's in my opinion. The sauce is bright, fresh and lively. Just the right amount of cheese and the crust is fairly thin with a bit of chewiness.
@pauliegee--yup that was a nasty winter. It's just one of those things we're used to and our snow removal rocks. All that salt on the road is hell on the cars though. Syracuse does have some strong Italian roots. If you're up here again, try Avicolli's for some good pizza.
@slice who cares? We happen to have some great water here in the Syracuse area. Our water comes from Skaneatles Lake; one of the most pristine lakes in the country. It's definitely not from Onondaga Lake which unfortunately became quite polluted due to industrial plants dumping crap. However it is being cleaned up.
@dhorst Thanks for the recommendation. I'll be sure to check it out if I ever go back. Hopefully in the Summer. As far as the snow removal goes, don't try to tell that to the families of the victims of these two seperate crashes. I used to drive past that spot every morning:
Late to the table here, but as a Syracusian ex-pat living in Chicago I must comment. First I have never found better pizza in Chicago - Homemade Pizza Co comes closest - than Syracuse, which I consider the best pizza city I have ever spent time in. Patsy's is by far my favorite ever and have been eating there since I was 8 (orginal locale near LeMoyne College). Pavones, Twin Trees, Sabistino's (if they're still open?), Johnny's, Varsity, Alki's (aka Acropolis), Before-is-was-Dorians & speaking of Skaneateles, there used to be an excellent joint out there, since closed. Now I'm hungry and off to find some pizza cut in squares.

Yowsa. Staying out of this, because, as I've confessed before, pizza is not my obsession.

Syracuse I say is a great small city with GOOD water, really cheap tickets to the local sports teams, and really crummy tv ads/service.
btw Joe's pizza in whitesboro,ny (outside Utica) is da BESTEST
