Reader comment and response is still pouring in thanks to yesterday's New York Times story. So many great comments and recommendations. And questions. Reaching into the proverbial mailbag, we have ...
Dear Slice,
Do you know of any good late night or 24 hour pizza places in NYC?
Bilal
Dear Bilal,
Slice is a homebody, more prone to lying prone on the couch at night, remote in hand, watching Battlestar Galactica. But our favorite late-night (if not 24-hour) place is Vinny Vincenz. Great squares here. Sunday through Thursday till 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday till 4:30 a.m.
Late enough for you?
And, as always, readers, if you know of any good 24-hour or late-night pizzerias, chime in with your comments!
Hasta la pizza,
Adam
VINNY VINCENZ Address: 231 First Ave., New York NY 10003 [East Village, b/n 13th/14th sts.; map] Getting There: L train to First Ave. Vincenz is practically on the corner Phone: 212-674-0707 URL:vinnyvincenz.com
This may be sacrilege to recommend the big R, but the Famous Original Ray's on the corner of 49th and 7th is open 24 hours and is actually quite good. Nothing flashy, of course... just a typical slice, executed very well, and available at all hours.
Here in Boston I'd kill to have a pizza place that was even open past 10:30. I guess there's a Domino's by Fenway Park that's open till 2:30 or something...but who wants to eat that garbage? Ok, I confess that I ordered it once...but usually I just walk over to the 24 hour CVS and get a frozen Red Baron Pizza. It's actually better than Domino's.
La Mia on 1st ave in the upper 70's and Piazza on 86th/2nd are both open very late- at least 2 or 3am on weekdays and 4 or 5am on weekends. Fresh mozz, tomato chunks & basil pizza is highly recommended at Piazza!
Checked out Vinny Vincenz after reading this article. Holy poop was it good. Had the sicilian slices for dinner, and then went back later on around 2 and got a margherita slice. My girlfriend and I loved the sicilian slices, though she seemed less impressed than I was. She, however, did go so far later as to proclaim the margherita slice "the best [she'd] ever had." With the caveat, of course, that she was admittedly very drunk. I will back her up in that they did make a hell of a margherita slice, but I'm not sure it was the best I've had. Worth going back, though, especially since it's open late and near some of my favorite bars in the city. In conclusion, best slice I have ever gotten in the city, but I'll say that with the caveat that I have only had fairly bad slice experiences in the city in the past.
i can tell you have never been woken up in the middle of the night by your wife to go and find some pizza and ice cream... well i will continue my search and if i find some one to deliver I'll send the http. Well wish me luck! tired and hungry in nyc
