Pizza to me is defined largely by having the roof of my mouth burned by cheese on a slice obtained at a walk-up window somewhere along the walk from the FCC field office on Washington and Christopher Streets in Manhattan, heading down to the old Radio Row between Canal and Cortlandt streets before the WTC was built. I did this walk regularly with friends in high school in the '60s, so the comment about pizza invoking a nostalgic experience may be true!
But for today's "ah-beetz," take me to Modern in Noo Haven! The plain pie with double mozz, and the white clam, is unbelievable. Better than Sally's, IMHO, and without the attitude. Way better than Pepe's (although I do need to try their white clam.) Not only the best pie, but unlike Sally's or Pepe's, you get a friendly staff and comfortable setting, nice clientele, usually a reasonable wait or no wait, great salads with anchovies, if desired, and excellent beers by the pitcher. (They're outside New Haven's Little Italy; they have to be better!) We've brought Modern takeout as fas as Albany and Martha's Vineyard for later enjoyment. It heats up great in the oven!
I certainly agree about Roseland in Derby, BTW. Definitely worth finding! —Dennis J.

I'm from Brooklyn (no kidding) and I've tried the legendary Pepe's several times. In my opinion Modern is better. The one exception might be Pepe's white clam. Other than that, it's Modern for me. I recently checked out the ZAGAT ratings for fun and Modern beats both Pepe's and Sally's for food ratings.
actually ate at modern last night. bacon/onion, bacon/eggplant, mozz. not as good as i remember, a bit limp in the center of the pie. still it looked great, excellent charred spotting on the undercarraige. great crust variety, half the pieces had 25% floury char and half were carbonated crunchy burn sticks. tasty stuff, still no sally's or bar. pepe's? :-P
Guys! Of course Modern is the best apizz in new haven! now, keep it on the hush-hush - you really want modern's lines to get as long as pepe and sally's??? NO! you want tourists and other non-natives to catch on?? NO! so ssshhhhh!!!! -rachel grew up in greater new haven resident and long-time modern devotee
Modern is great apizza, Pepes white clam is better, Sallys bacon is better, Roselands shrimp, or seafood is better, otherwise MODERNS THE BEST! Went there a couple of weeks ago and Willie Nelson was eating there, he must of had the munchies!!!

I love Modern and lived around the corner from it for two years. It's great, but in my opinion Sally's and Pepe's are just a bit better.

Sally's and Pepe's are for the tourists. Modern is for the locals. Shorter lines also.
