Virginia Reader Tip: Pomodoro

Dear Slice,
You forgot to include northern Virginia in your lists. And the best of the best is Pomodoro (Tony, the owner, is from Naples, by way of Brooklyn). —Larrie F.; Fairfax Station, Virginia

Thanks, Larrie. We're always looking for good recommendations for pizza made by New York City expatriates. —The Management

Yes, I would agree on Pomodoro's. I am a former Brooklyn-ite with years of experiene eating at the best places - Totonno's, Pasty's, Una Pizza Napoletana, Luzzo's, etc. I have also been making pizza for 15 years and own a wood oven in my backyard and make great neapolitan pizza. Hopefully all of this makes me qualified. The state of pizza in virginia/dc is as follows... There are a few good (typical) NY "street" pizza places in Virginia and Pomodoro's is one of them (Ciro's and Tony's are others). They use a typical recipe to get good quality street pizza. There are 2 pizza places in DC that claim to be great - 2 Amy's and Pizza Paradiso. Both are just ok - compared to any decent neapolitan place in NY. Yes, 2 Amy's is vera napolitan but that's really a meaningless certificate. These places are not bad but they are far from the best. Their dough is average. They may use some good ingredients - san marzano tomatoes, bufalo mozzarela but the artistry is not there.

I'm from Arlington (and lived in NY) and I loved the Italian Store's pizza and the white pizza at Faccia Luna (not NY style) was usually really good.

Faccia Luna has the best margherita pizza is by far the best pizza in the DC area. My family is from the Philly and New Jersey area and this pizza is very simular.
