Di Fara: More Info + Pizza Burning

Sunday at Di Fara (by Slice)
Di Fara, taken in better days just a couple weeks ago.

The New York Times has its take on the most recent Di Fara DOH closing, with a bit more on possible duration of the shuttering:

Ms. DeMarco, 30, said her family was scheduled to appear at a city tribunal on June 14 to produce the paperwork and to determine any fines and the next steps. Until then, she said, “we sit around and wait; nothing we can do about it.”

And while we're talking about Di Fara, let me mention something that has made me almost as sad as this latest run-in with the DOH...

Burnt pies.

There, I said it. And I hate to say it, but with readers calling me out on this in the comments, I've gotta say something.

I first noticed it about a month ago: a pie that Adam "The Amateur Gourmet" Roberts received looked a little too blackened:

I hoped it was just a fluke, but when I visited on May 20, here's what I got:

And then, on Memorial Day Weekend:

Maybe this break will give Di Fara some time to adjust the oven and fix whatever needs it.

I'd like to hope that they can get it sorted out. Without seeing him make a burnt pie, I can't imagine what it is exactly that is causing it.

Weird... the last time I was there, which was a while ago, one of the pies caught fire and looked like that. He promptly slid it into some out of sight place under the counter, where it was not served. Is the oven acting up such that he cannot do such "quality control" anymore? ...

I'll eat his burnt pizza. I was there a week ago. mmm.

Save DiFara's petition is now on line hi all, my wife and i live literally right around the corner from difara pizzeria and while we absolutely loathe the hype that's made it impossible for us locals to get what should be normal service, we love the fact that you appreciate his pizza as much as we do. dom is a great chef and he and his family are a credit to this neighborhood and to this city. between this and the demarco's shooting two months ago, they have suffered enough. having said that, i've contacted the family and had two lengthy conversations with dom's daughter, margaret. as you can imagine, the whole family is distraught and all they can do now is wait for the court date on the june 14th. and so, in effort to stimulate community support, i am - with margaret's careful input - drawing an online petition, the purpose of which is to just stick to the facts and make the issue as apolitical as possible: http://www.petitiononline.com/difara07/petition.html this out-of-the-way joint has a rhythm all its own and thankfully it does. it's the best of everything new york city has to offer. so unless you want a ray bari or a sbarro in it's place - or what's worse, another bank! - i urge you to show your support. thanks for reading and say 'no' to a generic nyc!,? bryan swirsky

worse than another bank. Another nasty ass kosher store.

I had difara's at the top of my rather long and fairly comprehensive list after my first visit in Oct. But I went in mid may and it was really not very good. Same burnt crust shown by Adam, plus other problems. I was pretty shocked to see how filthy the place was, given the recent closing. I saw the dirt in Oct, but figured the place was cleaned up after the closing. Not so. It was just as dirty. I'm a fan. I've shown zillions the video on youtube of Dom. It's an experience. But he could clean the place, fix the burning and know who ordered what. It's not too much to ask. Hire someone to clean up and keep the line straight. It's basic customer service and the cost of doing any business.

I like burnt pizza

stay outta our neighborhood you tourists! we want our pizza back! we were the first to give di fara its props before you ppl, now we can't even get a slice :(

Please. I live in the neighborhood, and as far as I'm concerned, anyone that is willing to wait should be able to eat Dom's pizza. If the line is keeping you away, go to Papa John's. Give me a break.
