Holy crap, pizza freaks! Di Fara has been closed for an indeterminate period by the New York City Department of Health. Says Eater, which broke the story:
In a stunning and shocking turn of events, we're now able to confirm with 100% certainty that Di Fara has again been shut down by the Department of Health. Furthermore, with the pizzeria having failed five of their last six inspections, Dom DeMarco's pride and joy will remain closed until further notice. Here is the statement just issued to us by the Heath Department.
The statement says that the department came in to inspect and found evidence of rodent infestation and other violations that were in excess of standards. The DOH concluded that, having failed five of six inspections in the last 18 months, Dom DeMarco and crew showed an unwillingness to comply with code requirements.
It's all seasoning, don't they know? Has anyone actually ever gotten sick? Let this genius be. My feat is that they'll make it so hard for him to reopen, that he'll quit. THAT would be a crime.
Again? Seriously, who fails that many times in such a short span? Also, who gets inspected that many times in such a short span? There are so few DOH inspectors! Do they really have the time to hound this guy? Aren't there worse infractions out there? What is the problem? Was it posted on the door? Was is things like gloves and temps and spoons sitting in sauces or things like mice and bugs and ratpoop?
No fucking way! I actually teared up when my friend called me to tell me! This is the ONLY FRIGIN PLACE THAT I EAT PIZZA AT (before midnight, then I sometimes get dragged to L&B by drunken mobs.) This is the BEST I've EVER HAD and I lived in Italy for a long while! Bah. Bah. Bah. They need to leave him the hell alone. This is so ridiculous. His daughter has breast cancer too, ya know. It's really fucked up.
well, not to sound harsh, but if you've failed that many times -- really, cmon, pull it together. and listen -- if I posted that pizza on my blog, everyone would laugh. be honest. half burned, poorly sprinkled green stuff, poorly distributed pepperoni. cmon. it may taste great, but we eat with the eyes, too, people.
@destiny: Point taken. In fact, the last few times I've been to the place, the pies have been burnt on one side. Not "slightly overdone," not "artfully charred," but, yes, burned. Neither you nor I are the only ones who've noticed the burning. This forced break may give Dom the time he needs to also fix his oven to alleviate the hot spots, if that indeed is what's going on.
Hey, I wish them the very best. Now, I really wanna know which vendor provided a crappy oven to one of the world's most famous pizza joints. Sure, ya gotta rotate, but even rotating wouldn't have saved this pie from a liquid-middle mess.
I don't care if his pizza is charred on one side, or if there is rat poo on my pie. I haven't gotten sick once, and I live a block away. That place is my home!!!! I will strap myself to that door with a chain holding me down next DOH inspection time. You all should, too, darniit! And technically, HE DIDN'T FAIL the last six inspections. You can remain open with a score as high as 24, his last scores were among the lines of 7 and 16, and for stupid shit like 'poor worker health' 'dirty clothing' not cleaning the work surface after each meal and the best one.. FOOD FROM UNAPPROVED SOURCES. He imports, you DOH arses.
Sounds like an unhealthy place to eat, and the guy sounds like a slob. And he had so many chances! He has problems. Put him on public assistance. I don't think he should have contact with the public at all. So many strong supporters, all because of the taste. You pepole have problems. Go write a fan letter to OJ.
Barry, you're an idiot. "So many strong supporters, all because of the taste." So we should support food we don't like? Dominick is NOT a slob, I walk past there every morning on the way to school, and he is clean as could be, and so is the tables, counters, and dining area. He walks around, takes notes, and then begins his day. He is not dirty, and neither are the aprons he and his children wear all day long. When yuo are making pizza after pizza from 12pm until 11pm, your apron gets sauce on it, your hands get doughey, and most of all, people do not throw their garbage away. He is only one person, and he was wearing gloves and a hat when the inspectors came. Barry, YOU have problems, now go back to eating your microwavable pizza.
