Frozen Pizza

I've been sitting on this story for a few weeks now, but in cleaning out my "To Blog" folder I happened upon it again. It's a bit old, but, hey, it's about frozen pizza--it's got a long shelf life.

Anyway, it's a short history of frozen pizza from Invention & Technology magazine dating to early 2005. It never appeared here because it predates the site.

I've been thinking a lot about frozen pizza lately and thought it was interesting and figured I'd share. It details the beginnings of frozen pizza--from the Celentano Brothers and Rose and Jim Totino--to today's rising-crust varieties, which conquered the gluten-destroying properties of early freezing methods. It's worth a read.

The photo at right, by the way, was taken at a Wal-Mart in my hometown of Olathe, Kansas. Almost that entire aisle is frozen pizza. I believe it amounts to 22 doors of frozen pizza and pizza products. I tried to count all the different varieties on offer, but I lost count. When the weather cools off and I can again fire up an oven comfortably, I plan to cook my way through that aisle or one like it.
