Openings: Pacific Pizza

From Time Out New York:

Pacific Pizza The closing of a dingy Smith Street pizza joint has made way for this upscale pie-mecca from the folks behind Pacifico. Chef-owner Richard Krause (Café Luxumbourg) will apply his two years at the original Spago to his West Coast–inspired menu. Come brunch, expect a take on the classic Puck pie: smoked salmon, crème fraîche and golden caviar.

Hmmm... Wait a minit! Didn't THEY own the "closing dingy Smith Street pizza joint"? The only pizza joint I can recall on that block was La Rosa and Son which was part of the Pacifico empire along with Gravy.

As a matter of fact, Pacific Pizza is almost identical to said "dingy" pizza joint. Nothing has really changed. In fact, they still have the same horrible habit of FOLDING the pizza in order fit the slices into to-go bags. In ordering two slices to go, I had to personally teach the rude and ignorant staff member how to fit two slices into a bag without folding them. He didn't believe it was possible to accomplish such a feat. It's a shame because the pizza is actually pretty good. They really should forget about serving slices and limit themselves to pies only... as they're obviously going for a sit-down style joint. Definitely not a NY-style pizza place.

I live right around the corner, and man, is this a huge step up from La Rosas (which I didn't like). I only like thin crust (and it is), and I'm a real simple pizzaman- yes, just pepperoni. But, the crust was thin and well-cooked (not too soggy from the trip, but it's only about 200 feet away), the sauce was nice and tangy, and they use blocks of cheese, instead of shredded. Not sure what difference that makes, but overall, it was great. I have no affiliation with them, but I gotta say, this is the best delivery pie I've had (although, I am pretty new to the 'hood). If someone knows of a better THIN crust in the area, please tell me, and I'll gladly compare.
