Slice's Coal-Oven Pizzeria Map lists all U.S. coal-oven pizzerias that we know of. Clicking the pizza icons will bring up address, phone number, URL (if any), and a link back to any entries Slice has on the particular pizzeria. It's a handy way to visually navigate the crisp-crusted world of coal-oven pizza.
The map legend is at right—and for this map, Slice Dude got a makeover with a little coal-miner's helmet. If we've missed any coal-oven joints that you know of, comment or drop me a line: adam@sliceny.com.

Note: There's a second Tomatoes location, but it is not coal-oven. Only the 14 Mile Road location burns the black stuff.

Angela's Coal Fired Pizza, in Saugus, MA (slightly north of Boston) opened in November. Their web site looks very promising (angelascfp.com). I live in Providence and will be going to try it out today.
Also added today: Tomatoes Apizza in Michigan and a number of Grimaldi's Coal Brick Oven Pizzeria locations in Arizona, Las Vegas, and Texas. (These are loosely affiliated with, but not run by, the same people behind the Brooklyn; Hoboken, New Jersey; and Garden City, New York, Grimaldi's.
I have a question... What's the big deal about coal ovens? Are you talking "coal" as in the black stuff from the ground or "coal" as in coals of burned-down wood?
I just returned from a business trip to NY area and ran uptown for a quick fix of Patsys Coal Oven. Grabbed 2 slices and I was back in heaven. I live in Orange County, CA and we have a few expatriates from NY that have opened up shop but the Pizza is still the typical Sbarros- large, heavy on the cheese with lackluster sauce type.
Over the years I've read comments on various sites that Patsy's has gone downhill, I strongly disagree and truly enjoyed a Slice for the first time in awhile. I grew up in Manhattan and lived there for most of my life and never heard of Patsys until 10 years ago after reading about the merits of Coal Fired Ovens.
I'd like to add one in Florida...Anthony's Coal Fired Pizza. They are a local chain that's the top choice for coal oven pizza in so fla. The toppings are fresh and I love the "burnt" crust! www.anthonyscoalfiredpizza.com
Thanks, Natalie2040. I see that Anthony's has ten locations in Florida. I didn't know that. I'll add them in the next couple days. That's gonna take a while!
I would like to add one place in Philadelphia. Fortunately, they have an old coal oven. Unfortunatley, they don't understand the fesh mozzarella. Let me in there to make my own pizza!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi
I MAY be mistaken, Modern is one pizza place in NHaven that I have NEVER visited, though I have heard and read plenty about it.....but I DON'T THINK Modern is coal? Is it? Somewhere, somehow I got it in my mind that it isn't coal. I checked out the website, it never mentioned coal, did it?? Please if I'm wrong, fill me in. Thanks.
Oh yeah, one other question. I have read posts from people concerning coal burning ovens and some state that the coal is IN the main oven compartment, and others state that the coal is in a SEPERATE compartment? Any info? Thanks again.
@gabagool: I'll check with Modern on the oven.
@everyone: I have to set aside some time to update this map. You've all given me some great new places that I haven't had time to place on here yet. Thank you all!
@gabagool: The coal typically goes in the chamber of the oven, same place the pizza goes. They usually push it off to one side and cook the pies on the other. Same with wood ovens.
A new coal oven store opened up here in SW FL at the Coconut Point Mall in Estero, between Naples and Ft Myers..It's called Tony Sacco's Coal Oven Pizza...Check them out at www.tonysaccos.com
On October 7, 2008, Joe Squared installed the only coal-fired pizza oven in Maryland. Voted Baltimore's Best Pizza - square pizzas with thin, sourdough crusts. Everything on the menu is wonderful. The Rochester-stylewings are not to be missed, either - Check out www.joesquared.com
@joesquared, @katleeela: I added Joe Squared to the Google map at top. Still have to add a lot of these places to the location list just above the comments here. There's a lot to add. It's taking me a while.
can we get an update on this map?
red rock in florida is closed.
anthony's has 9 locations in florida now.
racks italian bistro and market is opening in north miami beach in 21 days.
mona lisa opened in deerfield beach in december 2008.
Had pizza last night at Cassie's in Englewood, NJ. They most definitely use a coal oven. They have a sister location in Orangeburg, NY. Both could be considered NYC area - but should at least be on the national map.
katieeela - your reference to Joe Squared's "Rochester style" wings made me curious but from their website it looks like Joe Squared's wings are regular Buffalo wings. There is, arguably, a Rochester variant on the Buffalo wing but I've never seen them anywhere outside the Rochester area, certainly not by that name.

Two more:
Modern Apizza, New Haven, Connecticut
http://www.modernapizza.com
Giovanni's Coal Fire Pizza, Parkland, Florida
http://www.rewardsnetwork.com/details.htm?merchantId=89094
Also, two typos above: "Fire Rick" should be "Fire Rock" and "Prato's" should be "Prato"
