Pizza Cones Make U.S. Debut in K.C. Mall

I just got this email from my mom, and, boy, did I freak out.

20080107-kornetcones.jpg

Adam,
Saw this article [below right] in the KC Star on January 6. Looked interesting. Too bad we didn't see this while you were in town. We might try this, but not anytime soon, as you left us with so much pizza in the freezer. Hope the pictures get to you. We had problems trying to figure out the attachment part. Let me know if you get the pictures or not.

You don't know how much this hurts, ladies and gents.

20080107-kornet.jpgYou see, I've been dying to try one of these damn pizza cones since I first heard about them in April of 2004. Yeah, you read that right. 2004, people. And whenever this pizza-cone meme would resurface on Boing Boing or somewhere else, kind readers would send it to me—"OMG! Have you seen this cone pizza?!?" Of course, yes, I had, so their emails were only torturous reminders that I couldn't get one of these in New York City.

And now, my mom emails me, basically telling me that one of my white whales of pizza, one of my holy grails of pizza, one of my long sought-after food items, had been just a 20-minute drive away—at Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, Kansas—the whole time I was in the KC metro area for Christmas.

Not only that, but the article in the photo here tells us that this is the first U.S. branch of Kornet Pizza. Would you look at that—and in the very mall I used to rat around as a teen-ager.

And to think I didn't stop by the mall this year for a slice at Original Pizza, as I had planned. I'm sure I would have run into Kornet there as well.

Aarrgh!

This is the first time I've been jealous of Kansas City when it comes to pizza.

And, yes, Mom: I got the pictures.

Kornet Pizza

Address: In the food court of Oak Park Mall, 11519 West 95th Street,

Jealous? Looks about as appealing as wraps made w multi-colored, doughy, cold tortillas. Calzones, on the other hand...

Another case of Life Imitating Art. As fans of the Steve Martin film "The Jerk" may well recall, one of his many schemes was a product he called "Pizza in a Cup." Hope his attorneys can successfully argue his case for invention!

Yes. Totally frakking jealous, Eliz. Did I not say I've been wanting to try this thing for FOUR YEARS?!?!? This is not hyperbole for the sake of this entry. It's true. This is a serious advancement in pizza technology that must be sampled by mine own eyes, hands, and palate.

That said, I'm skeptical, of course, but am no less eager to try it!

I don't know about multi-colored, doughy, cold tortillas. Pizza in a cone shape? I'd buy that for a dollar.

Those look so gross. Then again, I ate a nasty slice of pizza this afternoon from a market in East Baltimore, so who am I to judge. (I miss living in Brooklyn!!!)

During the the Atkins craze I remember reading about a pizza place that would sell you a pie without crust. Everything was just melted together in a bowl or cup. ugh...

Isn't the pizza cone the invention of the famous Larry "Fats" Goldberg of whom Calvin Trillin writes so fondly? As I recall, Fats was from Kansas City. I note that Fats' invention dates from well before this century.

Have you notified Calvin? He may have comment on this. I bet you can reach him through The New Yorker's website.

I'd never heard of the pizza cone attributed to Fats Goldberg, but I can try to get to Trillin for comment. Thanks for the intel, Mizbee.

I saw these all over Florence (yes, Florence Italy for God's sake) this past summer. They're disgusting.

To clarify - I saw the product, not Kornet Pizza, in Florence. They called them "Pizza Cono" and could be found in just about every little snack shop or hotel happy hour buffet.

Punkin: Did you try them?

Come to think of it, Adam, did you ever run a 'tribute' column to Larry "Fats" Goldberg? The man is an icon of pizza.

annien: I've never run an obit on Slice for Goldberg, as his death preceded Slice's inception by about nine months. Goldberg died January 2003; Slice was founded October 2003.

Adam, although I think these look disgusting, I do believe that Ed needs to send you on an official business trip. After all, this is official business! Do you need help drafting a memo?

adam, i'd have to say that judging from the pics, you don't have to beat yourself up all that much. yuck!

On the subject of Larry "Fats" Goldberg's pizza cone, take a look at Chapter 11 of "Alice, Let's Eat" (the middle book of the "Tummy Trilogy").

Seriously, Adam, a salute to Goldberg would be excellent. In fact, I note that there isn't even a wiki for him . . . you would be just the man to write it!

Blech! If it ain't broke don't fix it. Regular old flat sliced pizza is good enough for me. The poster also says they have "dessert" pizzas. I can only imagine! BTW, CCCupcake...how about some good pizza places in Bawlmer??

@cybercita: I really want to try these. I'm still really upset that I may have missed them.

@Mizbee: I actually don't know all that much about Fats Goldberg. I think I missed his pizza in either NYC or KC.

@RichardCrystal: I'd imagine they weren't trying to "fix" pizza — just create something new.

Yo. Why all the hatin' on pizza cones? OMG. It looks FUN, people!

I feel your pain. I was just in the KC suburbs for the holidays and had NO IDEA about this until now, when I'm all the way back on the east coast. Oh man, now I'm bummed out.

DÄS_ÜMLÄÜT! Word! A commenter after my own heart!

here in italy we have a chain called.."kono pizza" where they put your pizza cone in a little conveyor belt to melt the cheese to scalding hot lava temp--and they come in two sizes..totally evil food but irresistible!!
www.konopizza.it
check it out..

@monicalups: Kono Pizza is the item I was referring to when I said I first saw this concept four years ago. It's what I linked to in this post. Cool stuff. Cannot wait till it makes it here to NYC.

This is pretty much a triangular open-ended Hot Pocket, isn't it?

Along not entirely dissimilar lines, the downtown Oakland branch of local gooey dough/over-topped chain Mr. Pizza Man has had a threatening sign up for a few weeks: "coming soon: pizza burrito."

Oakland Aaron sez, "coming soon: pizza burrito." Mmmmm. Oversized Totino's pizza roll! I can almost feel my tongue burning just thinking about it.

@Oakland Aaron: Ohohh. Pizza Burrito. Sounds like something I could make at home. But BrianPrestonCampbell is probably right in saying it's an oversized Pizza Roll. That or a cylindrical calzone.

Adam,
We are looking forward to schedule a piza cones tasting with you in NY, please contact me so we could schedule time and place.

I tried one. It tasted like a soggy pizza roll that you buy frozen in a box at the grocery store. Based on monicalups comment, they may be better when they are hot and fresh, but I'm still skeptical.

A NY tasting is certainly in order - count me in!

I'd like to share some information about expanding a cone pizza concept around the globe. Does it mean that pizza in a cone becomes as popular as a hamburger?..
