Dear Slice: There's Other Pizza on Staten Island, You Know

20080518-sipizza.jpgHi Adam,
Here are some suggestions for Staten Island. In regard to the three you have visited, Denino's is legendary here but not as good as they once were, Nunzio's is very ordinary, and I'm baffled as to why you so highly rate Joe & Pat's.

Anyway, some suggestions, with the name of the shop and the neighborhood:

  • Brother's in Port Richmond: Not only the best on Staten Island, but the best New York–style pie I've ever had
  • Gentile's in Tottenville: Excellent pizza, but only available by the pie
  • Kingdom Pizza in Eltingville: Pretty good, especially the vodka supreme; our everyday place because it's close to where we live
  • Lee's Tavern in Dongan Hills: Very thin, crisp crust

Justin K.,

Dear Justin,
Thanks for the recs, especially as I've been talking with some fellow pizza fiends about doing some Staten Island recon. A buddy had mentioned some places on SI that went beyond the usual, as you've done here. I'll sync up his list and yours and get over the V-N bridge for a crawl.

Hasta la pizza,
Adam

I had Lee's Tavern not too long ago. That is a tasty treat, for sure. Adding the other three to my list!

Adam: My source on Staten Island happened to be in the office here today, so I ran these by him. He was negative on the Kingdom Cafe, saying their slices were a bit too thick and spongy. He offered Sal and Lloyd's, on Richmond Ave., as a reasonable alternative to Kingdom. Any feedback from other Slice readers?

I've been to Nunzio's...other than their clumps of cheese as opposed to the ordinary shredded cheese, it was very average. Joe & Pat's, thin but flavorless. J&P is much better reheated at home. Just a few weeks ago I went to Basille's. If Basille's is as good as Artichoke, then all the hype is just that. The complimentary breadsticks clearly outshines the pizza we waited for. Reheated, turned the crust into cardboard. Goodfella's (award winning pizzeria?) tries too hard to be creative. I threw away the leftovers and I hate wasting food. Denino's is by far the best out of all the shops I have hit up in Shaolin. I haven't tried the suggested pies above, but I will definitely make it a mission before the year is over.

Don't take the VN, it's 10$ if you're not a resident.

Seriously though, I'd love to see a Staten Island Slice review, despite my love-hate relationship with my home-semi-urban-wasteland.

recently discovered and was pleasantly surprised by BIG AL'S pizza on Hylan Blvd. Their sauce is great!
