The Chronicle's Michael Bauer on Amici's in San Mateo, California

20080530-pizzafriday.jpgMichael Bauer, food critic for the San Francisco Chronicle, continues his Pizza Friday series on his blog Between Meals with a trip to Amici's East Coast–Style Pizza in San Mateo, California. Amici's makes what Bauer—and Amici's—calls an "East Coast–style" pizza.

Bauer says:

Crust: Thin-crust, with a pleasant crunch and chewiness.

Pizza tried: The New York-style cheese and tomato sauce is a mainstay and reliably good, but this time we chose the Amici's combo with slices of meatballs, pepperoni, bacon sauteed mushrooms and olives the Greek Isle where the crumbled feta, mozzarella, artichoke hearts and sun dried tomatoes, but not tomato sauce, worked to highlight the yeasty crust. There's also a lowfat and lactose-free pizza.

I can suggest shortening your trip by visiting Northeast Ohio and Ashtabula county. That is if you live on the East Coast or Midwest.

I mean, you don't have to go far to find good "east coast" style pizza.

Unfortunately SF is somewhat of a pizza impared city, but there are some legit places. www.slicefinder.com will get you started.
