The Pizza Polisher: File Under WTF!?

20080627-sheridan.jpg

Gawker just published a list of New York City's Top 50 Eccentrics. Check this one out, and then scratch yer head, kids:

46. Pizza Polisher: On weekdays and only in the summer, a homeless man rubs discarded pizza slices on the arms of Segal's lesbian statues in Sheridan Square. Via commenter Hamud Ibn Hamud.

Maybe he's getting the slices from nearby Bleecker Street Pizza? But it gets better ... after the jump.

The comment that earned the Pizza Polisher a place on Gawker's list actually was left on that site on May 1. Here's the full version, which is stranger:

On weekdays in the summer, and for some reason only in the summer, there's a homeless guy who rubs discarded pizza slices on the arms of Segal's lesbian statues in Sheridan Sq.

I've seen him do this a number of times and so have several friends.

We've all noted that the homeless guy doesn't seem to have a preference for the toppings on the pizza slices he uses, but the pepperoni is particularly eye-catching on the statues' white surface.

How wonderful that they've renamed the northern border of Sheridan Square after the late, great folkie Dave Van Ronk, who frequently appeared at various Village folk venues during his career. The following link features photos of the renaming ceremony, featuring a who's who of folk music in the village:

Slice readers should consult his wikipedia entry:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dave_Van_Ronk

and, while I can't pick out one song of his that represents the essential nature of his talent, iTunes has plenty. His version of "Swinging on A Star" was always a favorite of mine.

Isn't that crazy? I wasn't familiar with a "Dave Van Ronk Street," so I Googled to see who he was. Thanks for the additional links, Famdoc.

Who throws out pizza? Or, alternatively, what place is serving slices so bad that they end up in the garbage?

Someone needs to get a picture of this eccentric in action.
