Locavore Pizza in Alaska?

According to a New York Times reader, Finn's Pizza in Homer, Alaska, offers terrific thin-crust pizza made with local ingredients in a wood-burning oven. But how long can tomato-growing season really be in Alaska? According to an Alaska native we checked with, it's short, just two or three months, but since there are roughly 22 hours of daylight during summertime, tomatoes grow to jumbo sizes. And, he pointed out, "locavore" toppings could also include smoked salmon.

We ordered three 18-inch pies — very simple ones at that. A simple cheese pizza, a margherita, and a mushroom and thyme. When you have kids, you order simple. But the flavors of these pies completely defied their simplicity. Finn’s uses a mixture of dry and fresh mozzarellas on their pizze. The sauce is just pureed Muir Glen tomatoes. And the crust — a whole wheat version at that — is thin and loaded with nutty flavor.

Homer is a fantastic place to garden from what I remember from an old "Victory Gardens" episode from years ago. Yup, short season, but if I remember correctly, some extremely fertile soils and a warm water/air current that made for some super tomatoes and other quick growing goodies. I recall it was so inticing I wanted to pack up the family and move up there just so I could grow 'maters that big!
