Magma Pizza in Princeton, New Jersey, Using Lava Rocks to Cook Pies

You've heard of wood-oven and coal-oven pizza, but now there's lava-rock-oven pizza. In Princeton, New Jersey, next to the Sam's Club there, is a pizzeria using an oven filled with lava rock, in an attempt to achieve superhot, even cooking temps. New Jersey Monthly has the deets on Magma Pizza:

Order a slice, and you’ll get a strange oval shaped thin crusted pizza. Try it, and you’ll realize [owner Gabe Mahayni] may just have found the secret. The pizza is light from the grill, no grease or drip, just great flavor so each bite leaves you wanting more. The pies are round, and compellingly fresh as well. The calzones, and everything else is constructed before your eyes, and ready in a flash.

Is it just me or does that quote sound like it was taken straight from a press release? Anyway, I prefer my lava-cooked pizza made the traditional way, near a volcano thank you very much.

this isn't really pizza. you can see on their website that its a franchise. its typical chain pizza.

the dough tasted like it was frozen. the sauce and cheese were both terrible and it was expensive.

This the best pizza in New Jersey. The crust is superb, the sauce is exceptional and the cheese is of the best quality.

yeh this guy works for magma ^ try to atleast use some specifics then it might sound real

It looks that you work for the competition and very jealous of How magma"s unique pizza is attracting your customers.

Sam45 definitely works at Magma. This pizza is very expensive and tastes like bad frozen pizza. This place is just a gimmick. Go somewhere else

I was initially attracted to magma by its lava oven gimmick and boy do I feel cheated. Not only was the pizza an over priced slice of ellios (ellios taste better by the way) but the thin lunchables style pizza was so boiling hot that I had to wait a good 10-15 minutes for it too cool down in order to avoid a trip to the burn unit. I guess that is what happens when you cook in a fake volcano.
If you really want a slice of pizza cooked near a volcano I suggest you go to Pompeii and order a slice because Princeton NJ is not the place to find it.

I had magma's pizza and I agree with the writer, it's a pizza with great flavor.

Im-a from Italy and this pizza is delicioso just like Granny used to make. The cheese is a delicate explosion of flavors while the crust is crispy like a falling leaf on a cool autumn day. The SAUCE is the best, just like the RAGU uncle paulie used to make in sicily.

The lava rock was brought from Mt. Vesuvius for that authentic italian flavor.

This is a very entertaining thread.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

BTW, I've eaten pizza made with lava rocks from other places (Mt. St. Helens, some underwater volcanos) but nothing compares to the flavor of authentic Italian lava rocks.

if you are in princeton, eat at GENTEEL'S in a shopping center in Montgomery on Rotue 206, across from the Shoprite

4-5 bucks for 2 slices and a soda and the pizza is amazing

and it keeps getting better
