Dear Slice: Check Out My Birthday Pizza Cake!

Clicking in to the Slice inbox today, we've got ...

Hi Adam,
Avid pizza eater, and Slice reader here. I stumbled upon this secret birthday cake that my girlfriend was trying to hide above the refrigerator last night. Yes, today's my birthday (and, no, this isn't a shameless self-promotion). Instead of angel food or chocolate cake, I'll be eating pizza. Possibly for dinner, too. We're familiar with local pizza spots in San Francisco, but do you have a "must go" for a birthday celebration?

Thanks for your help, and long live pepperoni.
—Chris C.

Dear Chris,

Awesome cake. Does your girlfriend know you found the cake? If she reads Slice, she'll know now. Heheheh.

Regarding pizza in San Francisco, I'm not too up on the scene there, since I've only visited once. But, funny you should ask, since I just saw one of my Twitter friends (and Serious Eats S.F. correspondent), Jen Maiser, tweet about the new Pizzeria Delfina location:

Maybe try that, huh? And, Jen, sorry about mentioning Delfina, but the word's out, anyway.

Nice design, but I think it still deserves a post over here: http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/ Call it lack of imagination, but I get a little sick thinking about biting into a pizza looking cake and having it be all sweet and sugary. The sentiment is nice though :-)

Happy birthday Chris. I haven't seen anything on the new Pizzeria Delfina, but the original location is my must go when in the City by the Bay. It's on 18th and Guerrero in the Mission District. In addition to their excellent pizza (somehow crafted out of a gas oven) ask them if they have sand dabs. They were to die for. And speaking of shameless self promotion, PD is also a must go for my camera, as you can see in this link:

Ciao,

Happy birthday Chris! I just thought I'd weigh in on where to go for your pizza. Delfina does have fine pies, but I've found them to be made with an uber-thin crust that isn't always crispy, which I find disappointing. If you, like me, tend to prefer a breadier crust and a heavier toppings hand, I recommend Little Star. If you do go to Delfina though, try the anarancini fritti if they have it, they're great!

I just found this shot on flickr and it certainly looks like they did not opt for a woodburning oven for their Pacific Heights location:
