Joey Chestnut Wins Pizza-Eating Competition

Joey Chestnut, the reigning hot-dog-eating champ, handily crossed over to pizza earlier today in Times Square, eating 45 slices in 10 minutes. That's roughly 1.7 pizzas a minute. According to the New York Daily News, "He folded the slices—very quickly—and shoved them into his mouth. He jumped around some, to help them go down the hatch, or knocked back water from paper cups. He never appeared to chew. The slices were the typical cheese and tomato sauce variety, dished from a 16-inch pie carved into eight wedges."

It took me so long to eat half of a chicken sandwich yesterday, that I finally threw it out, for fear it had gone bad. My fellow diners (family helping me move) polished theirs off in mere minutes. I'll bet I could win an eating competition for slowest eater.

How in the world could he a) eat so much so fast and b) not chew?

'tis a puzzlement. Always curious - was he heavy or skinny? I'd bet on skinny. Just peeked - looked average size. Instead of a cash prize, they should offer free health insurance for a year. And barf bags for the spectators. ;)

Strategy: because the crust is thicker, chewier, and drier than the main part of the pizza have a cup of water to stick one's crusts in. Then every 6 slices or so, pound down the now-gushy crusts. Efficient!

Check your math, I think you meant 1.7 (actually, 1.8) minutes per pizza, not 1.7 pizzas per minute. Either way, that is an insane amount of pizza.
