During October, National Pizza Month, Sean Taylor Celebrates Accordingly

20081014-seantaylor-31days.jpgSean Taylor is a New York comedian and actor who, since 2002, has given over his October diet to National Pizza Month. That means 31 days of 31 slices from 31 different locations.

Each daily check-in on his blog, 31 Days of Pizza, features video footage—basically him and his friends analyzing the chosen spot, sometimes with his camera running out of batteries—along with Taylor's written ratings on the pizza's value and flavor and the joint's ambiance and service.

We hope Taylor is OK. He hasn't updated the site since last Thursday, October 9, though in past years this has been his M.O. We just figure it takes him a while to digest and reflect.

Thanks for the write up! The tardiness updating is due to the fact when I'm not clearing hard drive space, capturing footage, editing, rendering, exporting, and uploading, I'm probably traveling to some distant [delicious] pizza place I read about here on slice.seriouseats.com. This place rules.

big fan of the videos, sean- i cant get to all these awesome places so at least i can get a feel for what theyre like

@Sean You forgot to mention booking theater space for the month ending award show. You are doing a great job. Keep up the good work. Especially your fine pronunciation of pizzeria names.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

What bad timing, as October is also Celiac Awareness month. I suppose a gluten-free crust will have to help me celebrate!

I've done something similar the past 2 years! (I've done it in April though) See the documentation at http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicksherman/sets/72157604361755174/ and http://www.flickr.com/photos/nicksherman/sets/72157600047327176/, as well as the rundown from this year and the rules I follow at http://www.pizzarules.com/archives/21

@nicksherman I just looked at the first set and I would say forget the pizza when you're up in NE and stick with www.dailycatch.com . Best Sicilian seafood I've ever had. And yes, I've had seafood in Sicily. If you haven't been there, you have to go check it out. Of all the slices in your set, I liked the look of Chacho's the best. It looks better than most NY slices. I also find your method of upskirt display interesting.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

Thanks, Paulie...the award show is tentatively going to be held December 4th at the Parkside Lounge. Last year, I videotaped it in my room (my closet to be more precise... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LoWOS684884 ) but this year, it will be a live event with pizza (probably mediocre unless I can get someone to kick in some good stuff) and a screening of videos several folks are editing using my raw footage.

Nick, love the Pizza Rules pix. Follow the pizza! With it comes great people (like the folks on here), fun times, and delicious meals.

Also, thank you, RazorRamon, for encouraging me to do the videos. Now I best get back to editing. Gotta change my "M.O." so Erin Zimmer knows I'm OK .

@Sean Thanks for letting us know you're out of the closet. I don't know what park that place is on the side of, but I'll find out and be sure to be there on Dec 4th. I'd love to help you out with some serious pizza but as you can see, it won't be easy moving my oven:

Perhaps next year you can schedule the award show at my place. Or even better make it one of your 31 stops.
I see you are heading to NOLA. I can't recommend any pizzerias, but I can tell you with absolutely no uncertainty that the best place for a Shrimp Po Boy is Domilise's. For photographic evidence you can check within my flickr "Good Eats" collection in a set cleverly entitled "Domilise's".

BTW, how'd you get all those people in your closet?

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

Paulie, thanks for the seafood suggestion, but I'm vegetarian! :O
Chacho's is one of my favorite spots in the Boston area. I spend a lot of time in NY as well, so I get a good variety between that and Boston.

Sean, it's great to see other people doing the same kind of month-long pizza thing. The videos are a great idea too... there's been so many times that I've had an in-depth conversation about the pizza while I'm eating it, but then don't have the time to do a formal write up. Keep it up!

Thanks, Paulie...btw, nice oven! The Parkside Lounge is a bar in the LES (317 E. Houston) where I run a free monthly comedy variety show. The screening is only tentatively scheduled there because in past years the owner has preempted my December show with a private holiday party. If the holiday party is off, the awards ceremony is on. As for all the people, those are just stock crowd shots.

Nick- the videos were a natural evolution. I started "celebrating pizza month" in 2002 just taking photos, then eventually podcasts and now videos and award ceremonies. October is the most delicious month of the year. I'm sure people will question the nutritional value of your month of pizza, just show 'em the nutritional facts.

Sean,
Oddly enough, I didn't gain any weight during either of the years I did my pizza month. Have you had such luck?
Also, It seems funny that the month I chose for my pizza consumption extravaganza (April) is exactly half a year away from yours. Maybe it should become a biannual event!

@Sean Tell 'em to call it a Christmas party. People will be offended and they'll wind up cancelling the event. If the award show's on, you can count on me. I love that neighborhood. My father grew up their 100 years ago (literally) when it was still called the Lower East Side. Russ & Daughters is a treasure and you can't find a better bially than at Kossar's on Grand. BTW, I'm relieved to hear that all those people were not jammed in your closet.

@nick That would be a SEMI-annual event.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

Paulie, thanks for the correction, but I believe biannual works as well... http://www.google.com/search?q=define:biannual

@nick You learn something new everyday. Whether you want to or not.

Thanks,

Paulie Gee

The awards ceremony (and screening) is this Thursday (December 4th) at 7:30p at the Parkside Lounge (317 E. Houston St.). For details, check out the top part of my newly renovated Pizza Month '08 ( http://www.seantaylor.us/pizzamonth08.php ).
