This past weekend, there was a Ramen-Off contest in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn Kitchen. Contestants in the Ramen-Off had to repurpose this stuff of cheap meals, with an eye toward creativity and deliciousness.
The ramen dish above, made by Karol Lu, uses the noodles as pizza crust. As she told the folks at the Brooklyn Kitchen:
I wanted to make something that was the complete opposite of what you think of when you hear the word ramen. I also wanted the dish to be simple, inviting, and something that everyone likes. To me, this is pizza.
Even though I'm usually a vegetarian cook-off competitor and cook, I used pepperoni slices, because my vision was to have the pizza look so much like a pizza that it was kind of scary— like the ramen was wearing a pizza costume for Halloween. In the spirit of bad ramen, I made it a point to incorporate the (also nonvegetarian) spice packet.
I baked the pizza in a 10 1/4-inch springform pan (which I may very well have purchased at the Brooklyn Kitchen), and it worked perfectly.
There's a dish native to Osaka which has always been described to me as Japanese Pizza. Mix cooked noodles with flour and egg and toss on a hot wok. Flip and top as you like (pork, veggies, more egg, sausage) and add a kind of barbecue sauce...it tastes a bit like a mixture of barbecue and soy.
It's really nice, although I've never attempted to make it myself.
that looks yummy and awesome. I just sent the link to my gf in hopes she will make it for me =P (I can make it too, but she's just that awesome of a cook :-) ) (brownie points?) hehe
This picture made me cry. As I was scrolling down the page I first saw the luscious pepperoni and cheese, then the ricotta (which I first thought was cream cheese, yummy!) and I was drooling at the tastiness.
I have vowed to only say nice things about photos, or say nothing at all. So, the nice thing I would like to say is I appreciate having so many people I respect, like juliebugs, dhorst and S_Bella say what I dare not.
I like ramen noodles buttered with or w/o the seasoning (maybe about half of one) with layers of thinly sliced american cheese between while they're still nice and hot, no pizza sauce, might try small bits of meat with, though.
I regrettably give this an "ick," although I tend to have ramen bias. During a financially lean season in my life, I ate more ramen than I care to remember and it's hard to even smell ramen now.
Top Ramen had a recipe/cooking contest back in the 90's and one of the winners or finalists created a ramen pizza. I think it had ground beef amongst other things. Maybe the seasoning packet was incorporated in the beef topping rather than in the noodles (???).

Whoa!! This is probably the saltiest guilty pleasure pizza I've ever seen. This is a compliment, by the way.

Gross. It looks like that pizza went bad a long time ago.
Spanno at 12:28PM on 11/13/08
Yucky. Crust looks like maggots. Sorry.

NotAmerican- That sounds like okonomiyaki.

thank you Julie, for beating me to the first thing I thought of too, now I don't have to type out the "m" word.
GROSS

omg, please don't do this ever again. I don't want to eat for 3 days now. That was disgusting.

I probably wouldn't make it, but I'd try some if someone else did.

Then I saw the ramen-- the horror!

If ever a meal could scream, this one would scream "COLLEGE!"

Ugh, sorry but that looks disgusting.

Agree on the maggots, but I'd still try it
JacquelineS at 10:40PM on 11/13/08
I have to agree with the "M" word contingency. I'm sure it's wonderfully tasty, but I don't think I could get over the aesthetics.

It wasn't as hard to find the Top Ramen pizza recipe as I'd thought. It's on their main recipe page (scroll down to the bottom):
