How to Make a Pizzarito

20081209-pizzarito-rolled.jpg

"Did you know you can roll up those Totino's and eat them like a burrito?" asked Greenolivemedia in response to an earlier post on Slice.

My response, the ever-so-calm "NO! WTF! THAT IS AWESOME."

You know I had to try it, so I did. Step-by-step photos, after the jump.

The package suggests cooking the pizza directly on the rack at 450°F. Don't. I'd suggest cooking it on a baking sheet at 425°F instead. This will keep the crust from getting too crisp to roll. (I didn't have a baking sheet on hand in the office, so I used doubled-up aluminum foil. Avoid this, if you can. My pizza stuck a bit.)

The crust will be hot. You might want to roll with some paper towels or a clean kitchen towel—or just work quickly. You sort of want the intense heat, though, so that the molten cheese seals the pizzarito together at the end.

Roll it tightly, like you're rolling a big doobie. You've never rolled a doobie? Don't lie to me—you're eating Totino's Party Pizza, aren't you?

Finish so that the seam side is down, and let pizzarito rest for a few minutes. This accomplishes two things: The cheese will cool a bit and seal the roll and the crust will become cool enough to handle.

Eat with caution. Even if the crust is within the barely touchable range, the insides remain piping hot.

Eating the Totino's in this manner really did seem to change the Totino's experience. Cooked as it was, the crust was hot, moist, and a bit greasy—almost like a kati roll. A pizza-flavored kati roll.

Making the Party Pizza into a pizzarito put much more focus on the crust—and you can take that as you like, depending on how you view Totino's crust. I happen to like its weird flakiness, so I was happy to get what amounted to a full-frontal crust assault. The roll also helps you avoid the dreaded pizza mouth-burn.

A huge thanks to Greenolivemedia for the suggestion!

I'm not entirely sure what this says about me, but I am now on the way to the store so I can try the Totinurrito.

@ultradave: Probably as good a way to spend $1.70 and 20 minutes.

Anyone wanna bet how long it will take for someone to fry this? The Pizzachanga.

Asado: Genius!

If I had seen pic #2 out of context, and asked what it was, I'm not sure I could have come up with "pizza". Or that that would be the right answer.

I would (will?) roll up a decent hot dog or sausage inside that sucker! mmmmmmm.....

You must be kidding me. Is this a real post? About rolling pizza?

@poodle: Are you viewing this? If the answer is yes, then it's a real post!

Seriously, though, Greenolivemedia talked about this this morning, I grabbed a pizza and tried it this afternoon. I thought it would be fun. And, guess what? It was.

I am so doing this. I've always had an embarrassing weak spot for Totino's.

Oh man- sounds good. Here in the greater Seattle area, those little gems are sold for $.94 each, and we love them as our guilty snack. Rolling takes them to whole new level. We also refer to them as "cardboard pizzas". Cheap and evil, but oh-so-good!

LOL, rollin 'za. Awesome.

I always wonder what kind of damage I'm doing to my esophagus by scarfing super-hot pizza cheese...

It's Taco Time!! (Re: SNL sketch about the taco wrapped in a pizza, wrapped in a blueberry pancake, wrapped in a bun, doused with cheesesauce, smothered in salsa, served in a tote bag)

hahaha Roll it like a doobie. Awesome.

Now, the ideal combo would be to roll a pizzarito and then swiftly drop it into the gaping mouth of a doberman, like in that video...

Oh God, I am gonna get one of these tonight. Throw in some peppers and salsa in the middle, hit it with the Tabasco....I'm salivating just thinking about the possibilities.

Come on Adam its not a real burrito unless you stuff it! Roll up a burger or something in there :)

Pizzachanga!!!!!!!!!

As a lifelong Tostinos fan, this sounds amazing. I would just stuff the middle silly with cheese, wouldn't even matter what kind.

If I have ingredients on hand, I like to soup up my totino's with extra cheese, some spices and maybe some fresh veggies. The extra cheese results in topping drift. The pizzarito just might be the answer to all of my problems.

I'm thinking that this could be rolled more burrito-style and stuffed with pizza rolls baked right on top the the 'za. I want it now.

So... I just made a pizzarito. Well actually, I took bacon, wrapped it in pizza, and covered it with chili, and then covered it with cheese.

It was lovely. Now I'm eating a tangerine to even out the food karma.

thatgrrrl has the right idea. Jam some pizza rolls in there....would adding a couple slices of bacon taking it too far???

Awww yeah, cook it half the time (get the dough soft), load it up, roll it up, stick a tooth pick or two into it, throw it back in the oven and finish cooking... Let it cool for a mo or two then throw down, fantastic!!! I am starving now!!!

That has got to be the worst cheap pizza ever. Tonys rules.
