Slice Twitter Intel Bot: @slicenyc

OK. I asked what you thought about turning @slice into a sort of pizza-intel-gathering source. Most people balked. So I took a suggestion from LikesToEatJunk and created a new account. @slicenyc will retweet anything tweeted at it. So if you're out and about and see a new pizzeria going in somewhere, just tweet something like this: "@slicenyc: New Famous Ray's opening on 27th & 6th" The @slicenyc account will then retweet that to all followers. I'm not sure how well this will work, but it might be a fun exercise in crowd-sourced pizza info gathering and dissemination.... More

Black Sheep Coal-Fired Pizza, Minneapolis

Minneapolis Star Tribune On Wednesday, our man in Chicago hipped me to some coal-oven news I had been sleeping on—that a joint called Black Sheep Coal-Fired Pizza in Minneapolis needed to be added to the Slice Coal-Oven Map. Yeah, Daniel Zemans must have been prompted to ping me by the the story in the Minneapolis Star Tribune about the place. Says the newspaper:... More

Thinking of Making Some Changes to Slice Twitter; Would Like Your Input

I know you're probably getting sick of me posting about Twitter the last couple of days, but bear with me. This one is warranted. —The Mgmt. Since I've been twittering as @slice, followers have seen the account go through a couple different phases. Phase One began as my own personal account, which made sense to me at the time—after all, there was little separation between the personal and the pizza in my world. For many of my friends, longtime readers, and Twitter followers, Slice and "Adam Kuban" were pretty much synonymous. But a few months ago, I realized that the... More

Dear Slice: 'Slightly Grim, But ... '

Clicking in to the Slice inbox today, we've got ... oh boy. Repeat nonfatal shootings (of the same man) outside a pizza place. Talk about dedication to your favorite slice! Love the site, as a denver transplant from ny, your blog lets me live vicariously (and jealously) through all the great pizzas you are privy to. Thanks, Rachel... More

The 'Chronicle' on SF's Pizzeria Delfina (Pacific Heights)

A Margherita pie from the original Pizzeria Delfina location in the Mission District of San Francisco. Michael Bauer just dropped a review of the new Pacific Heights location. The San Francisco Chronicle's food critic, Michael Bauer, visits the Pacific Heights offshoot of Pizzeria Delfina. (The original Pizzeria Delfina is in the Mission District, where it opened three years ago next door to its progenitor, Delfina.) I had some great pizza at the Mission Pizzeria Delfina not too long ago, but Bauer's criticism—that it's inconsistent—echoes that of many of my pizza spies. Bauer says: After my first visit, when I... More

Papa John's Now Twittering

Speaking of Twitter, it looks like Papa John's just started tweeting (@papajohns) making it the first of the major chains to make use of the microblogging service. The @pizzahut and @dominos usernames are either being Twitter-squatted or those outfits have not bothered to update.... More

'New York Daily News' on The Obama Pizzarama

Joliet Herald News Diehard Slice readers have already seen this story—about the pizzeria the Obama family frequented in their Hyde Park neighborhood in Chicago and how that joint, Italian Fiesta Pizzeria, will be serving pies at the inauguration. Heck, we even went and sampled the place: Italian Fiesta Pizzeria: The Obamas' Chicago Pizza Favorite, Reviewed The New York Daily News wrote about it yesterday, in a story that doesn't really update us on much. I do, however, want to point out this passage: President-elect Barack Obama and his bride, Michelle, are big fans of Italian Fiesta pizza, a specialty... More

Twitter User @pizza Doing a Lame Job of It

Whoever has the @pizza account on Twitter sure is doing a lame job of it. Only four tweets in almost two years. Not even following anyone. The account holder should relinquish it to someone (cough, cough, @slice) who would tweet it properly.... More

Beyonce Song 'If I Were a Boy' Inspired by Pizza

myspace.com/bcjean Songwriter BC Jean to the Hartford Courant: Lyrically, it took about 15 minutes. The song started because I had the title. Toby [Gad, producer] and I had written about 11 songs together over a week or two.... So we were walking through Times Square, and I said, "I wish I were a boy." ... I said, "That pizza smells really good, and I'm trying not to eat carbs, and I wish I were a boy so I didn't care." That's how the song started, and he was like, "What else would you do if you were a boy?"... More

Quote of the Day

"I love New York pizza. I just can't explain it to people [in L.A.]. You can be driving anywhere in Long Island and stop at practically any strip mall, and the pizza will be the best pizza you've ever had. I have yet to find that in L.A. People will tell you, 'Try eating here. It's good!' Yeah, it's good. For L.A." —Kevin James, actor... More

The Real World Brooklyn Goes to L&B Spumoni Gardens

An email from a friend asks: "Did you watch the new Brooklyn-based Real World? They went to L&B Spumoni Gardens." My answer is no. The last thing I need in my life is to waste an hour of it watching a group of fame-obsessed, sexually confused post-adolescents work out their cringe-worthy issues on TV. But when one of Brooklyn's favorite pizzerias is involved I can hold my nose and tune in. Unfortunately, the bit at Spumoni Gardens lasts all of 5 seconds, consisting of the cast ordering and eating the square slices the Bensonhurst joint is known for. I've... More
