Di Fara 'Temporarily Closed Due to a Medical Emergency'

20090123-di-fara-closed.jpg

20090123-difara-02.jpgFrom the answering machine at the legendary Brooklyn pizzeria Di Fara: "Due to a medical emergency we are temporarily closed. We are hoping to reopen on or before February 1. Thank you for all your concern, and have a great day."

We hope that everyone's OK at Di Fara and that this only is a minor medical emergency. We've tried to contact Di Fara and will bring you any news as we can get it. [via Chowhound; thanks, David J.]

UPDATE (4 p.m. 1/21/2009)

I just heard from Maggie, Dom DeMarco's daughter. She and Mr. DeMarco were in a car accident on Monday evening—black ice on the road. Maggie's OK, but Dom broke his knee cap, she said.

"He is scheduled to have surgery," Maggie wrote in an email. "Post-surgery requires about 4 to 6 weeks rehabilitation, which my dad already informed he will rehabilitate at work instead."

This is bad! This is VERY bad!

I guess I'll have to get completely overrated pizza somewhere else for a while.

@mikemaple is lucky we don't do commenter executions on Slice.

best wishes to the family and thank God
nothing worse happened

shit, I'm feeling the urgency of getting out there now to taste this holy grail of slice pizza... Dom will not live forever, unfortunately, ad I don't want to live with the regret of not having had any. Even if I end up thinking Sal's is better which is always a possibility, because I'm such a homer.

@Adam Kuban

Hammer of truth! Hammer of truth!

what a terrible thing. Hopefully he can get some rest and rehabilitate....great dedication to want to go to the restaurant for rehab, but I hope he takes it easy.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Dom and his family. I'm sure they'll all be fine. Get well soon!

He must not have been wearing his seatbelt. Get well soon Dom! Prayers for a speedy recovery!

Get well very soon, Dom. And please start teaching someone your secrets so that you can take proper care of yourself when you have to.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

How sad to hear to the news! Thoughts are with Dom and his family. I was just there last week and got a great square pie and 2 plain slices. Without a doubt the best in NYC. Something about the seasoned pans and oven gives his pies extra flavor. You have to appreciate a man who can calmly take a round pie out of the oven with his bare hands.

We should all sign a "Get Well Soon Dom and Maggie" card. I hope they are well.

Dom is a national treasure. No, I am not a fanatic, but that is where the word 'fan' comes from and I am a huge DiFara fan. When he is on there is nothing like it, not even in Naples. When he is off we take what we can get. All in all it is totally worth the wait and the chance. This is unique wonderful pizza.

Knee caps are tricky. At his age it might never be the same again. Let's hope the guy recovers quickly and is not in a lot of pain (hard to avoid with a knee).

What what what?! No. I truly hope he gets well quickly and comfortably. Legendary pizza from someone genuinely devoted to his thing. I'll miss him (and will be thinking of him) while he's recovering.

Get well soon domenico!

Get well soon Mr. Domenick. You're a legend, and we need you around to keep the ovens burning hot!

oh, I realllly hope they reopne on 2/1 as expected... I'm going to be in NYC on 2/2!

@Simon. You are missing out. I finally got there a couple of weeks ago and I was stunned and humiliated. Dom definitely makes the best pizza in New York, no doubt about it. I had a round pepperoni to dream about. I'm going back for a square pie as soon as Slice tells me he's back in action. @Dom good health to you. At least sit down while you work.

just called and the voicemail outgoing message says estimated reopening is "sometime the week of February 3 to 8."
