Legendary Pizzeria Vows to Reopen

This is horrible news. I just got this from Slice reader Rob S.:

I just wanted to let you and loyal Slice readers know that I went to Totonno's in Coney Island this morning, and the place has burned down. Apparently this morning at around 8 a.m. the place caught on fire. When I visited around 1 p.m. all the windows were broken and there was serious fire damage.

Hopefully they will open again soon!

Update: The Headlines Roll In

Just caught the 6 o'clock NBC 4 news by accident. The lead story was Totonno's. Damage looks extensive. Major bummer.

I hope everyone is OK and nobody was hurt.

Just got word from Cookie in Coney Island.
Looks worse than is, restoration crew already on site.
Yes heavy damage but not down to the ground.

Oh no! That's terrible news. Glad to hear that not one was hurt. Hope they'll be able to reopen soon!

Insurance money? Lots or burning building in these parts a few decades ago.

That's no insurance job. That's the oldest pizzeria in Briookyn. You don't burn it down for insurance money. My heart bleeds for Cookie and her crew. Bring her back as good as ever. I raise my glass to you tonight.

Oh no! Please don't let it close!

This is terrible! According to one channel, it was an oven fire, which I unfortunately predicted. This episode can't possibly look good for coal ovens which are already banned in many places. Hope they rebuild ASAP.

Is the coal oven OK? IS THE COAL OVEN OK!?!!?!?

Though we have not eaten at Totono's in Coney Island we have eaten at Totono's at 125 Tuckahoe Road in Yonkers. We have to admit that the comments about their pizza being the best around is 100% correct. We were sorry to learn that this Coney Island landmark was beset by fire and seriously damaged.

A bit of good news in the video report. The oven is still standing:

Here's more video:

The damage doesn't look to bad at all. Their goal of reopening in six weeks seems realistic based on what can bee seen.

I have to be politically balanced so I got an NBC report to offset the Fox report:

I think the headlines are cruel. In addition to "Burnt Crust", the Post had "Coney Pizzeria Overbaked"

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

What was the NY Post's headline?? They usually have the classics.

@Mooner "Coney Pizzeria Overbaked" was the NY Post headline.

a fellow pizza-fiend told me about what happened - came here to find out. thanks for posting the info. i was also surprised to see my picture used here! thanks for doing so and for the credit.

@pizzasnob: Thanks for letting me use the photo. You actually have the best exterior shot of Totonno's (as it once was) on Flickr!

@Adam I bow to pizzasnob. Here's my little shrine:
