OMG, WANT: Colony Grill Pizza, Stamford, Connecticut

20090427-colony.jpg

Photograph from Writing With My Mouth Full

Lately I've been putting links to non-Slice pizza reviews in the new(ish) Leftovers link roundups, but something about this photo of a Colony Grill pepperoni pie on Writing With My Mouth Full calls out for its own post to highlight it.

Blogger cia_b spends much of her review dissing pizza in general—to the point that you fear the awesomeness of this photo will outstrip what she has to say about Colony. But at the last minute, she comes around and confirms what seems evident here: that the pizza here rocks.

I have not yet traveled to Stamford for Colony, but this photo makes me want to jump on the train north or take out a Zipcar NOW. Colony is famous for its "hot oil" topping—hot as in "spicy"—which is drizzled all over a pie when you opt for it as a "topping."

You can see the areas where the oil bubbled up and transmogrified the cheese into a pockmarked (and I'm guessing) almost crunchy landscape.

WTF is that?....looks worse than a Totino's. It's like the Plan 9 of pizza.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone ever had a Lean Cuisine pepperoni pizza circa 1998?

Re: the oil topping--lots of Greek pizza places in New England and in Greece itself put oil on top of the pizza, or on the pan. As a kid I used to love it because it tasted like Pizza Hut, but it's so heavy I doubt I could digest it now.

I'm giggling, thinking of 'pizza blotting' amongst the girls in high school...guess there is none of that here...

Wow, the instant I saw the pic, I knew that was Colony. I haven't been in years, but it's freakin' fantastic--the cousin (with a thyroid condition) to Eddie's of New Hyde Park on Long Island.

Get the Zipcar. Hit Eddie's AND Colony. It'd be a great day.

I didn't allow myself to go to Colony in high school because I would break out afterwards...true story. Its not for everyone, but I used to love it.

It kind of looks like it's been in the microwave. Not that I wouldn't eat it.

The guy who gets the slice at 8 O'clock gets screwed!! Half a piece of pepperoni!!!

Is this "caviar pepperoni" or something?? They couldn't put a few more pieces on??

I grew up in Stamford and it definitely had a lot of great thin crust pizza places - all sort of variations on the Colony Grill pie. I tried to take my girlfriend when we visited last year and practically all of 'em but Colony are gone. This pizza's fantastic, and the hot oil goes perfect with a pitcher of beer.
I was about to say there's basically no other reason to go to Stamford. But actually I can now imagine a pretty lovely day involving taking the I-95 to Colony and then going to Cove beach.

Adam, you gotta try it. These hot oil pizzas are great.

PS: This photo on roadfood has been taunting me for years. I finally had one last year and it was greeeeeaaat.

I agree with Bearsilber. It reminds me of a frozen pizza. The cheese just looks wrong - perhaps too rubbery. The pepperoni looks fake, too. Methinks a different photo might be a better choice if this place has really good pizza.

That's a pretty spot-on photo, Mad Ernie. So looks must be deceiving to the uninitiated in bar pie delight. Because that's some good eatin'.

Having eaten Colony pizza many many times I can tell you it's fairly good until it gets cold, which is about 30 seconds after you take the first bite. It's also super greasy.

I've been to Colony Grill more times than I can count, and it is simply fantastic. Cracker crust, great cheese, and great sauce. The Italian sausage is from DeYulio's, right across the street, and is superb as well. I always load up when I am in Stamford, or near it, and bring home at least half a dozen of these. They freeze well, and if you ask, they will par-bake them for even better freezing. I generally order them fully cook, freeze them in slices, and just place the slices in the toaster oven directly on the rack. Heaven for sure.
