Reactions to the 'GQ' Top 25 Pizza List

In lieu of a Leftovers roundup today, I'm just going to give you an overview of what people in various cities are saying about Alan Richman's Top 25 pizza list.

Alan Richman with his controversial list.

  • Chicago Pizza Club: "... Like so many critics from outside of Chicago, Richman entirely dismisses deep dish and stuffed pizza."
  • Chicago Tribune: Great Lake, "a notoriously slow pizzeria in Andersonville will become even slower."
  • Detroit Free Press: "Detroit is the third-best pizza city in America... To make the accolade sweeter, Chicago came in fourth."
  • Eater LA: Why L.A.'s Mozza didn't make the cut.
  • Houston Press: "Richman ignores most everything outside NYC and Chicago."
  • pizzamaking.com: It's awfully quiet so far on this usually chatty and knowledgeable pizza forum.
  • MenuPages Boston: "Richman is a heretic for putting Boston dead last on Top 10 Pizza Cities list."
  • MenuPages SF: "Since New York has a population of about 8.25 million, and San Francisco about 765,000, we actually have more pizzerias on the list per capita."
  • SFoodie: "San Francisco has 12 percent of nation's best pizzas."
  • TONY: "Richman buries Naples’ supposed hegemony like a Vesuvius eruption."
  • worstpizza.com: Pizzaexpert says there ain't room enough in these here United States for two pizza experts, Richman. And yes, we know, he'll have to review each one of these on his site.

Just got back from SF, and had Pizzeria Delfina. It was pretty awful, I don't know how it could possibly make this list. There are plenty others more deserving and this one is at number 3!

I guess, like a_______, everyone has an opinion. So here's mine. Leaving Mozza off this list is libelous. No justification. If their toppings are not traditional enough, stick with the margherita and sausage.Mmmmmmmm.Went to Tomato Pie after reading the article and thought it was quite tasty, particularly the Grandma to which I added sausage. The crust, though, was way to thick. So,#7 is an absurd rating.Antica is the real deal...some of the comments on the LA food link are absatively lunatic. Order the margherita with sausage, ask for it to be "well-done" and you will be in pizza heaven. As for the above comment, it is simply difficult to believe that Delfina was "pretty awful"..People, its time to get a reality check!

IMO, not including on the top 25 list removes all credibility.

That should say not icluding Di Fara in the top 25 list emoves all credibilty.

And what about Domino's, Pizza Hut and Papa Murphy's? Not even a mention to the 3 best pizza's in the US ?!

Kidding of course.

I read about half of the GQ article and then realized the author was completely ignorant to the subject he was trying write about.

This article was a joke- yes, he did include some great places but it's amazing some of the places that weren't included AND some of the stupid places he did include. This article could have been written by joe schmo as far as I'm concerned; this guy knows nothing about pizza (and to continually diss Italy and its pizza, are you joking me?)

Adam, I challenged you years ago on the Difara love and now readily admit how wrong I was. Any list that doesn't include Dom is a total joke. I loooooove Totonno's but COME ON.

My top 10 plus. http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/305174
Ever since Richman dissed New Orleans, I've found him hard to take "seriously" but his pizza list demonstrates either a real lack of experience or simply the desire to piss people off. Even the pizzerias that he includes that I agree should be on a "top" list (e.g. Sally's), he orders something ridiculous like a potato pie. The one comment I have to agree with that he makes is that when it comes to pizza, America (specifically, IMO, NYC) has it over Italy (Napoli).

Pizzeria Piccola: Milwaukee
http://www.pizzeriapiccola.com/
It is Milwaukee's one place that could have been mentioned in the article. They strive for authenticity.

@Gutter: Love the Nick's in the list! Sometimes it seems to get forgotten in the age of newer pizzerias.

I think the only people who would get pissed off at the list are either pizza fanatics of various levels (like us) or people with a vested interest in whatever shops did not get mentioned. From the perspective of someone not living in NYC, but who visits a few times each year, I can tell you many people are completely clueless about pizza and have little interest in it, much less a place to go to find out more info.

After being a little pissed off myself initially, I realized this article at the very least helps to potentially raise some interest towards our favorite topic.

@ Pizzablogger Just remember, it is better to be pissed off than pissed on.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

@ Paulie Gee: lol.....'tis true. And believe me, the Italian half of my blood literally boils every time I read that Italians do pizza "wrong".....and especially after hearing that mozzarella di bufala is pizzas "second worst topping"....mon Dieu!....to blaspheme indeed!

So, how was Phoenix? Do tell! --K

@Pizzablogger I myself am not a big Bufala fan. I do like it mixed in on DiFara's and Lucali's pies though. PHX was a remarkably rewarding experience. I've left comments about it in two items here; "Conratulations Are In Order" and "Fat-Guy.com Pizza Guide Republished". I think those were the only two places. Over the next week or so I will be posting pictures in flickr from Bianco and Settebello in Vegas. You can be sure I'll let you know when they are posted. BTW, what's the other half of your blood?

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

@ Paulie Gee: the other half is 100% red cross on white background English wanker, and I'm damned proud of both halves! :)

Can't wait for the pics! Thanks.

@Guttergourmet: I forgot to tell you that your daughter has impeccably good taste in pizza!

@Pizzablogger You have to wait, but not much longer.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

Come on ... how much talking about this guy ...

HE IS A LIVING CONTRADDICTION....

Less than a year ago he was mouth watering talking of neapolitan pizza he had in Japan ... Now he "destroyes" 300 years of tradition telling that Neapolitan pizza is disgusting ...

He does not like Neapolitan Pizza because of Buffalo Mozzarella and Anchovies ...

HALLO, McFLY? IS ANYONE THERE?
DID ANYONE TELL Mr. "ALAN McFLY" THAT NEAPOLITAN MARGHERITA IS MADE WITH FIOR DI LATTE and NOT WITH BUFFALO MOZZARELLA?
DID ANYONE TELL HIM THAT NONE OF THE THOUSANDS NEAPOLITAN PIZZERIA HAS ANCHOVIES ON THEIR MENU?

No passion behind Pizza in Italy ????
Is this guy KIDDING ME ????

Come on pizza in Napoli is a religion. There is no pizza without Napoli, there is no Napoli without pizza ... One cannot leave without the other ...
Mr. richman, give me a break ...
I honestly cannot take a Mr whatever to come-out with such a stupid article and throw 300 years of tradition and culture in the garbage ...

The funniest of all ????
After all this big article, he includes at least 9 Neapolitan (or better, Neapolitan wanna-be) pizzeria in his list of the 25 ....

IS HE KIDDING ME ???
What's it's point?
Can he be that stupid?

Come on, this article was a joke ...

One last thing.
Does anyone know where Mr. richman buys his "dope"?
That stuff is good, it works .... look how many BS he writes after he smokes it !!!! ah ah ah let's joke about it !!!!

LIFE IS BEAUTIFUL ...
