No Love for New Jersey Pizza, Richman?

bugs-states-nj.jpgDunno if you're tapped out on reading any more reactions to the Alan Richman Top 25 Pizza List, but I haven't yet seen someone from New Jersey get in on the pile up—until now. Here's Caroline from the blog Devil & Egg defending the Garden State's cheesy honor:

Now for my complaint, where's the Jersey representation!? What the friggin frick! I mean, come on. Providence, R.I., gets 2 pizzerias! New Haven gets 2! NYC gets 5 (and didn't include the original Patsy's in East Harlem)! Michigan gets 4!!!! San Francisco 3? Philly gets 2! And Jersey ... 0

Come on. New Jersey has a fine, and very well-respected history of pizza making, specifically another regional specialty known as the bar pie....

I feel this neglect by Mr. Richman is unjust--Jersey may not have squash pies topped with pine nuts or rosemary sprigs, but they still have something special. Really.

Admittedly, Slice is a bit weak in the Garden State pizza game—I don't have the car power to get around like I need to in the Jerz—but that doesn't stop me from rabble-rousing here.

Adam, you have to try Doris and Ed's ultra thin crust in Neptune, NJ. There is also Attilio Pizza near me, in WLB which is a total hole in the wall, Jersey strip mall pizza place that is wonderful--run by Italian-speaking people that have been there since I had my first slice. Plus, Monmouth Park is right nearby, so you can even make a profit on the ponies afterwards....or eat the pizza at the racetrack picnic grounds...

Here's my best of:

Napoletana - A.Mano in Ridgewood

Coal Oven - Grimaldi's in Hoboken

Tomato pies - Delorenzo's (Hudson St.) in Trenton

Bar pies - Reservoir Tavern in Boonton

Don't forget about boardwalk pizza like Mack & Manco in Ocean City.

Delfino's in Hoboken has a great Sicilian slice. The add the cheese fresh before going into the oven.

I can't believe that no NJ spots made the list. Not even my favorite Delorenzo's (Hudson Street). Haven't tried the Robbinsville location yet (I live in DC now). I heard a rumor that the Hudson Street location closed for good (location and hours not mentioned on the website).

I rencently hit Robbinsville. Seemed identlcal to Hudson Street.

Ciao,

Must agree about DeLorenzo's (Hudson St.) in Trenton. We really enjoyed the 'tomato pie' (cheese under the sauce - who'd a thunk it?), as well as the ambiance - '40's wood paneling!

DeLorenzo's is great stuff.

My favorite bar pies in NJ are at Star Tavern in Orange. So good!

oh, and @ HeartofGlass, are you talking about Pete & Elda's in Neptune?

@El Mimbre--yes, I am!

Sorry--I misspoke about the name, El Mimbre Pete & Elda's was the 'za I was referring to (I was thinking of another restaurant when I posted)

Perhaps my all time favorite pie is from Fortissimo in West Orange... I often find myself dreaming about eating there again.

Jersey pizza is 2nd to Brooklyn.
I love Resevoir Tavern in Parsippany, and DeLorenzos in Chambersburg (Trenton), so many great pizzerias down at the shore.
Hard to believe we were snubbed. So what else is new?

Star Tavern, best pizza hands down. And I've had quite a few NYC pizzas as well, and Star is still the best.
