ZOMG! Barone's in Los Angeles

20090506-barones.jpg

L.A. Pizza Blog

Something about the looks of this pizza makes me want to eat the crap out of it. JAB at L.A. Pizza Blog reviews it and says:

This pizza as you can see is extremely different than any other pizza I've had, probably most pizza you will get anywhere... The crust was very thin and crunchy... Toward the middle the crust was a little less chewy but still retained the dense, thin, and chewy traits... The sauce was a heavier tomato sauce similar in style to a pasta/marinara sauce with a lot of flavor and spices. The cheese was put on generously as was the sauce. There was a deep orange liquid on top that I at first thought was more sauce but actually was the oil that seeped through the cheese. It was a very greasy pie.

I'd have that thing for breakfast right now if I could get my hands on it.

This looks similar to the review I gave on Vic & Angelo's pizza. It looks amazing, and I will have to try it!

I so wanted to eat the monitor when I saw this....this picture of beauty. Damn why is all the places that have pies like this always NOT where I live?

@pizzaexpert: If you are going to be constantly whoring your site on Serious Eats, don't you think it would be nice to give them a link back?

Is this the same Barone's that used to have the $5 clam dinner on Wednesdays? Plus $5 carafe's of wine??

I grew up eating Barone's and it is truly not like any pizza I've eaten anywhere else. My NY born and bred husband agrees and makes sure we eat it every time we go back to California to see my family.

It's funny, I was just eating at Barone's the day this post came out. I do a regular comedy writing meeting. It's a great unique pizza. My problem with this post is that while LA Pizza blog is an amazing resource on LA Pizza (many kudos) I can't get in line with his standards, for him to be so dismissive of Robano's/Albano's which is the best pizza in L.A. makes me question his other calls.

@pizzacomedy: and I question your judgment if you claim that Robano's/Albano's is the best in LA, better than Mozza and Antica. i also think that almost all of LA pizza is crap

I didn't include Mozza because it is unfair. It's a different type of pizza, and yes it is fantastic. Sit at the bar if you can. BTW - I knew someone would bring up Mozza. And yes there is a lot of crappy pizza in L.A. as their is in New York...BUT...the best 5/10 places in NYC I've tasted would be better than anything in L.A. But the best L.A. pizza would no doubt be very successful in NYC. Again, I wasn't bashing the LA Pizza blog it's just to dismiss Albano's/Robano's is just not right.
