Clicking in to the Slice inbox today, we've got, um, a question I can't answer because I've never been to Rome. Anyone out there wanna chime in? —The Mgmt.
Hello,
What does a pizza cost in rome? I need a little help/direction before I can start. Any nuggets of wisdom would be absolutely great and very much appreciated. Please help. Thank you for your help.
It would help if you told us why you're asking. Is this for budgeting ahead of a trip to Rome? Is it just for research?
Pizza was originally a peasant food—a flatbread topped with whatever was on hand. As such, it's been my experience that it's relatively affordable wherever I've traveled. I haven't been to Rome, so I can't speak for price there, but I'd imagine it's not going to break the bank.
Additionally, from what I understand, Roman pizza is often baked in long rectangular strips and you can simply order as much of the pie as you want. In that case, I've heard it's priced by length. So determining a price depends on how much you'd order.
Anyway, there are people reading this with much more knowledge than I have. Maybe someone else can chime in.
On average, depending on the type of pizza that you choose, a round pizza costs about 6 to 10 euro.
As Adam said, there is pizza al taglio, these are various types of pizza which are rectangular and and you can request to have it cut as big or as large as you like. They are sold according to weight. Each small piece costs about 2 euro each.
@Adam
yo you've never been to rome?
yo you GOTTA go :)
if you do i'll send you an itinerary and foods to eat
i get asked so many times i got tired of handwriting it out
so i typed it and have one for many more cities
Rinaz's price quote sounds about right for a round pizze from when I was last in Roma (when the Euro was converting at about 1.44 Euro per $USD..ouch!)
God, I can't remember the exact price for pizza al taglio, but I want to say the pizza I got from Antica Forno was about Euro 2.50 per piece......it is VERY damned hard to top a start to an evening which includes purchasing a nice bottle of wine from a store or enoteca, ordering a few pieces from Antica Forno and then eating the pizza with your purchased wine while sitting on the pedestal under the statue of Giordano Bruno, watching people walk by and eating on the Campo as the sun fades from twilight into early night as it has done over the Campo dei Fiori for centuries. Roma is fantastic!
With the exception of the small round pies you get at sit-down places like Port'Alba in Naples, most of the pizza I've eaten in Italy was sold by weight, ("al taglio"). You walk in, you point at the pizza you want, and the pizzaiolo gestures incrementally at the pie with his knife until you signal how large a slice you want. He cuts it, heats it, weighs it, you pay him, and it's great. Or, on rare occasions, it's not so great, (I ate some mediocre pizza near Rome's Termini Station). This transaction should require little or no fluency in Italian.

Danny, you are correct on all counts. My Euro 2.50 per piece mention was for a slice of about six inches or so.

Oh, sigh. You've got me remembering the many, many pizzas I ate in Rome. Sigh.
