Dear Slice: '1- to 2-Hour Wait, $5 Slice'

Dear Slice, Letters From Our ReadersNothing could ever pursuade me to go back to that farce of a pizza joint. THey could raise the price to $10 a slice or drop it to $1 a slice, they've got the worst service on the East Coast.

My hometown of Philadelphia has some decent pizza but I'm looking forward to dropping by this DiFara's place. Now I've eaten pizza all over Italy, from as far as the Italian Alps and Venice to way down to my late Grandfather's home in Sicily. My most recent visit in October of 2008 had me eating a ever-so-thin-pizza in Rome (Pizza alla Margherita: cheese, tomatoes, basil....that's it). It was delightful. For $5.00 per slice, it must surpass those I've eaten for years in Italy to get my seal of approval.

BTW, I just learned of your blog via NYT...very cool, looking forward to following it.

Same here, just read about the blog in NYT as well. Love it as I love Pizza and needed a place to vent.

Ok, In my opinion, DiFara's is really a great place. I really like the pizza, it reminds me of what a pizza parlor was when I was a kid in the 70s. The man makes all the pies, hand adorns them with all the best ingredients you can find. Go, enjoy, and make your decision on the worth but $5! No way. Look, please don't try to tell me that he's got some skyrocketing rent or his heavy hand is to account for the $1 jump per slice. It's BS. it's just another reason to go to L&B if you're out there now. Along with Pete, I've also not only been up and down Italy and tasted the best but also up and down NYC and hit all these new pizza "galleries". Look, it's one of the best foods on the planet. Don't ruin it by making it pretentious.

Is that Spumoni Gardens you are talking about?

I won't be taking a special trip to the city for DiFara's....I like to eat at Dominick's on Arthur Ave for a cheap Italian meal and then head over to the Calabria Pork Store. I'm getting hungry....

@Pete Freans I hit Dominicks a few times, but slammed on the brakes after I ordered Veal Parmigiana and was served a patty. Ever check out the Arthur Avenue Market. There's some great stuff in there. Mike's Deli for one and lots of exotic animal innards at the adjacent butcher shop.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee

@Pete Freans, @bigbully: Welcome! I'll try to live up to expectations!

@Paulie Gee No I haven't made my way to Mike's Deli yet...I definitely want to check it out, thanks.

Yes, Dominicks has gotten some mixed reviews, especially from New Yorkers. The last time I was there, the old Italian waiter threw the empty plate down in front of me so hard that I thought it was going to shatter. I'm going to give it another chance and tell them to hold the patty.
