Approaching the realm of self-parody, Pizza Hutannounced today the release of its Stuffed-Crust Pan Pizza. It's the first "upgrade" to the chain's popular Pan Pizza in three decades. From the press release:
Stuffed Crust Pan Pizza is Pizza Hut's classic Pan Pizza with a ring of cheese baked deep into the crust. Available for $10.99 for a one topping, Stuffed Crust Pan is an awesome combination of the warm golden Pizza Hut Pan Pizza crust with a ring of gooey cheese stuffed deep into the crust. In 1980, Pizza Hut introduced the Pan Pizza, which changed the pizza world forever and became Pizza Hut's signature recipe. Fifteen years later, Stuffed Crust flipped the pizza eating world as we knew it upside down - literally, inviting pizza fans to eat their pizza crust first! In 2009, these two greats have joined forces.
Has anyone had one yet? If I had a Pizza Hut that delivered near my house, I'd be all over this.
As if the grease and fat content wasn't bad enough in a regular pan pizza from PH, they've decided to plan a whole new product and ad campaign on more cheap, bad tasting food that will send you to the cardiologist even quicker. So much for the war on obesity in the US. Way to go Yum! Brands.
Right on, Mad Ernie!...this new pizza product is "sickening", both literally and figuratively...Just appealing to the lowest common denominator of the food service world: salt, cheese &meat. Im sure there's some sugar in it, too. AK, I know you're kiddin...
My arteries are clogging at the mere thought though I must say the pan crust is my favorite from Pizza Hut.
Was not really a fan of the original stuffed crust but this is even worse. The pan crust though delicious isn't the most health conscious and adding a ring of cheese is just...........well probably, swoon inducing!
"I'm not gonna try it. Hey, I know. . .Let's give it to Adam. He'll eat anything!"
:} You know we all love you, Adam. Normally, I'd jump at a chance to take one for the team, but I have to be in some kind of real mood before I buy any kind of pizza. I know my boys, though, and I'm sure one of them will order it within a few days of seeing the commercial--I'll make sure one of them invites me over and when it happens, I will dutifully report back to you here.
Sure looks to me that the "ring of gooey cheese stuffed deep into the crust" caused a little bit of pepperoni shrinkage.
I don't think this is new - I remember this coming out years ago and getting it as post-Passover dinner. It wasn't so good - it tasted like they put a string cheese in the crust. I wonder why they are making such a big deal out of it now.
@NYCEater: Was it a Stuffed Crust Pan Pizza? The Stuffed Crust (non-Pan) has been out for years, but the Hut is saying the Stuffed Crust Pan is what's new.
When we first moved to this pizza-forsaken wilderness, Pizza Hut was the best pizza we could find, which is a horrible thing to think about. Now there's one place that's halfway decent, but still not great. It's probably been two years since we ordered pizza from anywhere.
Pizza here is so bad, in fact, that when pizza is served at a weekly business lunch I attend, I'm more likely to opt to go hungry than to eat that pizza.
So this is different from the cheese that was INSIDE the crust, which was called stuffed crust pizza? Remember the whole "eat the crust first" commercial?
They moved the ring of cheese a little bit closer to the center and then sent out a press release to say that this is new.
I'm pregnant and the only thing that doesn't upset my stomach is gingerale and cheese. This, this I would definitely try, even if I hated myself a little bit.
There's a big difference in the dough and pan used to cook a pan pizza vs a stuffed crust pizza. The stuffed crust goes on a flat perforated pan, and has 5 (IIRC) cheese sticks wrapped up in the crust. It also uses a nasty sauce that's thicker and sweeter than the standard pan pizza sauce.
This may have changed in the 15 years since I worked at a Pizza Hut :)
I must admit to eating this in the past few days. The adverts in the newspaper were just too much for me to resist. I knew it would be that Pizzahut oh so good, terribly painful in your stomach greasy buttery pan pizza. It did not disappoint.
The first two slices were near heavenly in the way only a PizzaHut pizza can be. As it cooled it started tasting weirder and I began to wonder even more about the cheese used in the crust and if it was, as suggested above, string-cheese.
Bring the leftovers home from work, the girlfriend (who is very picky about food) quickly devoured 2 pieces while scolding me on bring devil food into the house. Ezra (the dog) seemed to enjoy the partial piece that I gave her also.
If in a perfect world where you could order it a slice at a time and get a perfect slice every time 7/10. In the real world sharing a pizza or two with a group of people, not getting perfect pizzas, letting them get a little cold 5/10 max. Add in the lingering pain related to the digestive process, I will not eat at Pizzahut again for a long while.
My curiosity was peaked by the nutritional info comment--I checked and it is prominently and ethically displayed on the website--390 per slice, or 1/8 of a pan pizza for the cheese variety:
Wow. What a bunch of wimps and overly cautious weenies! This pizza looks AMAZING!! Granted, taste in food is in the tongue of the consumer, but I suspect that many of those who claim PH tastes bad or cheap are relying more on bandwagoning than self honesty. I would bet that in a blind taste test against more expensive "gourmet" pizzas, most of you who are lambasting PH would actually prefer it. Is it fattening? Heck yeah. Full of cholesterol? You bet! Utterly and totally worth it? Ab. So. Lute. Lee. Have you people never had off days from an otherwise healthy diet? Learn to splurge and live a little, and get out there and try this fantastic looking creation. Kudos to you, Pizza Hut!!

Whats next, cheese stuffed pepperoni? A cheese pan
I'd have to imagine that pretty soon, they're gonna run out of places to shove more cheese.

But I will pass (I think!) on this.

And I'm not blaming Pizza Hut or any other fast food joint for continuing to come up with fat-laden dishes!
Obviously, there is market out there somewhere for this so that's why we continue to see these type of foods.
But why blame them??? If you don't like it, eat elsewhere or better yet, for the ultra-picky buy your own shyt and eat at home!
jlewfoodie at 10:43PM on 08/31/09
jlewfoodie has is right. If you like Pizza Hut, go for it. I agree with others that their greasy pan pizza is their best crust. It is what it is.
I don't do Pizza Hut anymore (or any of the chains), mostly due to the inconsistency and cheapness of the product. The quality's just not there.
The idea that Pizza Hut's pizza is any worse than any other commercial pizza out there is ridiculous.

I was on their site a few days ago, ready to order, but one look at the nutrition info scared me off.

Junk food crap---But should be a winner with this recession. A customer will feel he is getting more for his money.

@L.A. Pizza Maven: I'm not kidding. I want to try it to see how crazy it is.
