If you thought South Florida was immune to the pizza craze sweeping the nation, you were wrong. (Of course, if you've been paying attention to the Slice Coal-Oven Pizza Map, you'd see that the Sunshine State is now leading the U.S. in number of coal-fired pizzerias.) The Miami Herald checks in with a great guide to "gourmet" pizza around the Miami-Dade area. And it seems like Bertoni Brick Oven Pizza could only exist in Florida: "The quirky Argentine-owned pizzeria attached to a carwash looks more like a South Beach club with its stunning mosaic murals, sleek furnishings and mood music." The list (and addresses) of the pizzerias the Herald visited appears after the jump. Did they miss any that you know of?
Anthony's Coal-Fired Pizza: Multiple locations; see eccomiami.com
Fratelli La Bufala: 437 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach FL; 305-532-0700; fratellilabufala.com
Joey's: 2506 Northwest Second Avenue, Miami FL; 305-438-0488; joeyswynwood.com

If I want:
-Meth-addicted strippers
-mid '80's Camaros with T-tops
-Ex-cons with neck tats
-Columbian drug lords
-A population whose average IQ hovers around 80
-A place to watch German tourists get carjacked
Red Rock is gone, replaced by something else, but it still has the same oven. I will try it again. When I went there after it first opened they burnt the pie--no, not a nice char, burnt. Coal Mine Pizza, owned by a friend, is very good, but not being a true "Boca" person even though I have lived here for almost 40 years, I can't afford an $18.00 (basil) personal pizza for lunch. After beverage, tax (6.5% here) and tip, things run past $25.00 which is more than I can afford. Most here can afford it, the owner is a great guy, and the pizza is very good. I go there once or twice a year to treat my daughter. I suggest you try it. Anthony's, out in West Boca, did not get a very good review from my daughter and her friends. They like Coal Mine much better. I have not tried it, so will reserve judgment.
The Herald did a decent job but was a little late to the pizza party - there's been an ongoing pizza crawl for the past couple months that's covered most of these places:
The one notable place that's not on the list you've given above is Casale, recently opened by the folks who own Sardinia Ristorante: www.sardinia-ristorante.com
Anthony's (specifically, Ft Laud on US1 near the airport). Beyond having an incredible grilled flavor to their crusts with a richly cooked marinara, they made me a believer for anchovies on pizza. Would that I could get that sort of pizza in Boston (which has equally incredible pizza eats, just...different).
@Frodneser Casale must be a good place if it's affiliated with Sardinia. I saw the place featured on an episode of Daniel Boulud's After Hours. It looked amazing. I was particularly take by the package of gualciale from www.salumeriabiellese.com/ the owner showed Daniel. Those guys are serious. Here, see for yourself:
It was also nice to see that Laurenzo's is still alive and kickin'. When I lived down there in '75, a visit to that place was better than a trip to Disney World.

They missed Red Rock Coal Fired Pizza in Boca.
We were there a few years back and really enjoyed our pies.
The pizzaiolo was pleased to show us his oven and his coal supply (brought by truck from PA).
A real treat in Boca. I meant to do a review, but....

I'll go to to South Floridia.
It is the last place I would go for good pizza.

@ Truff Maybe you should skip the "Bad Boys" movie marathon next time it runs on Spike.
