Looks like we're mostly folders. It was a 60-40 split in favor of the technique. But the binary nature of the question did not allow for such wisdom as doled out by jaysus in the comments: "I have no preference when it comes to folding a slice; sometimes I fold it, sometimes I do not. I let the slice decide."
That's pretty much my philosophy on folding, too. Although, for the most part, I try not to fold because I feel that it changes the nature of the slice. Instead of getting a bite of cheese-sauce-crust, you get a double billing of crust. For a really sloppy slice, though, there's almost no avoiding the fold.
And of course, as Alberto points out, this question is moot when it comes to deep dish. And outofprintbooks gets props for bringing up the subissue of flipping the tip back and introducing the notion of knife and fork making the pizza experience untranslatable. Thanks for answering. New poll TK on Monday.
oh lord, folding the tip back. This is one of the great crimes to be perpetrated against pizza. A perfect slice is a symphony in three movements, and it must start with high notes of mozzarella and sauce on the top of the palette, while the crisp crust thunders against the bottom teeth. folding it over gives you a discordant bite of dry crust both on top and on bottom, and no amount of subsequent gnashing and co-mingling of flavors can bring them back into proper alignment. you'd have better luck setting a piece of newspaper on fire and trying to read the words from the smoke than you would getting the proper flavor of pizza from a slice with a folded-back tip...
well reasoned argument and i have to go along with you.
yet lorenzo and sons on south st in philly has to fold the tip back for the slice is too large for the plate.
a truly wonderful example of the pizza craft.
no toppins allowed on a slice only bu the pir.
i was told that philly people use their slice as a wrap for chesse steak sandwiches
talk about your gordito puh leeze
forza pizza
Thanks for the shout out in the article, Adam! I've been looking hard for that clip of Adam Richman eating deep dish, but I can't find it anywhere. I also need to correct my previous post. I said he was eating at UNO's but really it was Gino's East. Sorry.
I have folded a slice or two but only because it was necessary to keep me from losing vital toppings! Having said that, I don't think you should HAVE to fold to eat a slice comfortably.
Folding? Gasp! The cheese-sliding, the favoring of the crust over topping--I am horrified! That is like trying to judge a slice only eating the crust and taking off the cheese or vice versa!
I do use a knife and fork, often for sanitary reasons. If you 'have' to fold you're eating your pizza too fast and too casually!

A slice from Lorenzo and Sons is about the only slice I would even consider folding the tip of.

since deep dish isn't real pizza we don't have to worry about it. ;)
