Jim Leff on an Old-School Slice in Waterbury, Connecticut

I love the way Chowhound co-founder Jim Leff describes the pizza at Angelina's Apizza in Waterbury, Connecticut:

Quick slice, reheated, totally knocked my socks off. It wasn't just like 1972 pizza (ala Sal's in Mamaroneck), it was like the BEST 1972 pizza. Intense, almost sharp cheesey flavor, unapologetic oregano, crust ends crispy and cylindrical, like great bread sticks. Not thin-crust or gourmet in any way, this is a barebones place, but the pizza was like a time machine.

I like the idea of "1972 pizza." Of course, I was about 2 years away from existing at that point.

1972 - the year I graduated high school... and a great year for pizza. That year it was either Rocco's on Brighton Beach Avenue or Johnny's on Kings Highway & McDonald Ave, or, of course, L&B Spumoni Gahhden! In the seventies, it seemed like all the music sucked and all the pizza was perfect.

Lil and I generally avoid Waterbury, but we may have to go now...

I was 10 in 1972 ... there is a place in Tampa that serves pizza slices that taste EXACTLY like they did back then, me and a buddy of about the same age love to have lunch there.

Just a regular large slice of greasy cheese pizza is hard to find these days.

Redfish, which place in Tampa? C'mon, don't tease!!

If you are looking for a change of pace from those NY slices and want some real deal Napoletana, check out this place:

Great pies coming out of a killer oven. If you go, tell Dan that Paulie Gee sent you.

Ciao,
