The blog Always Hungry visited Frank Pepe's The Spot in New Haven, Connecticut, and did a five-pie tasting.
As chronicled here before, Frank Pepe's the Spot is the original Pepe's location, and Off the Broiler's Jason Perlow says it's the, ahem, spot to go, as far as the New Haven Frank Pepe's locations are concerned.
Always Hungry tried the original tomato pie with mozzarella, the clam pie, a sausage pie, the clam pie with bacon, and "chai pie" (cheese first, sauce on top), saying:
What's so great about Pepe's? Basically, the crust (and we're talking mainly about the Clam Pie whose crust is slightly thinner than the sauced pies) is light and thin, the salty-sweet tomato sauce, the proper amount of cheese. Regarding the clam pie, it's almost a mortal sin to do it, but you can freeze it, reheat it in a crappy toaster oven and it still tastes amazing and fresh. Now that's something.
