Dear Slice: 'How the NYC Trip Turned Out'

As you may recall, "TJ" wrote in for some Slice advice on where to eat pizza during a trip to the NYC area. Here's a followup from his trip. --The Mgmt.

Dear Slice, Letters From Our ReadersI was only able to get to Di Fara. What an experience—very, very good pizza, but not nearly the best ever. Enjoyed the experience. I did not like that they par-bake the square pies in advance, and though they are a better value purely in terms of amount of food for your dollar, all three of us present vastly preferred the round pie. [Me, too. —The Mgmt.]

I did during this trip encounter the very best pizza I have ever eaten—at Frank Pepe's. I did consider your advice and we did indeed walk down to the street to Sally's, but Sally's is closed on the day of our arrival—Monday—making the choice of Pepe's much easier. Just out-freaking standing. The three pies we had now occupy the number 1, 2, and 3 spots of best pizzas I have ever had.

Aside for AHT—I know that the Luger burger is loved by many and not so much by others. Put me 101% in the former camp. I did indeed find as many have that they don't seem to cook it to the right spec—my medium-rare came out more medium to medium-well—but it was nonetheless the best burger I have ever eaten, and one of my fellow diners concurred wholeheartedly. That, and for 10 bucks, one of the best values around.

So—I intend to get the family over to NYC in the next 2 to 3 years, and Patsy's is next on my list—and a return to Luger's.

Finally, thanks again for all the help. Slice and AHT are daily must-reads for me and they always will be.

Thanks,
TJ

I was driving through New Haven this weekend and, based on Adam's recommendation in the original post, I stopped at Sally's. Thanks, the pie was great! One hour wait outside, one hour wait inside, but, with otherwise decent service as well.

glad you made it to Di Fara! i would agree it's maybe not the best slice around, but it's still my favorite spot in nyc. i love watching dom make his pies. more than that though, i love watching him bare-hand 'em outta the oven. that guy's either got calluses as thick as my skull (which is pretty thick), or nerve damage.
